1981 NASCAR T/A questions
I picked up a very tough 1981 Trans Am last night, I have been told that it is a Nascar edition.
I have two questions; 1: the vin # is 1G2AX87T6BN11**** trim tag shows: B O2D 2FS87 N 188611 18C 11L 19U AR9 C C1 Y85 A31 BL2 130193 Is this a real Nascar T/A??? Question 2: The car is rough. The motor and trans are gone and so is most of the interior. The disc brake rear end is in place but the car has some rust issues too. The rear speaker deck and the entire panel behind the rear seat has been cut out to allow for some big stupid stereo system. Is the car worth restoring or should it be parted out? I kinda feel bad parting out such a collectable car (if it proves to be a real Nascar) but the car needs ALOT. What should I do? I would appreciate the advise or opinions of the members here, let me know your thoughts. Brian Scoles.

I would part it out. If it needs as much work as you say, the restoration costs would out weigh the worth of the car at this time. Especially since the original drive train is gone. Just my opinion.

I'm NOT totally up on the 81 VIN decoding,as they added extra characters that year, but I'd say that the X (5th character) indicates limited edition "Recaro T/A status".
If so.I believe it's one of 2000 built, which makes it (arguably) the most desirable 80/81 T/A. HOWEVER,I'll have to side with Turbo on this one.(sounds like it's too far gone/too much missing )to put back together. You would be MILES ahead ( money & timewise),to go out and purchase one in decent shape(NOT rusty with all of the original parts intact) & in good shape. I don't believe there is many/any of the specific parts available in repro for this model,so you would have to hunt down decent used stuff, which is ALWAYS time consuming & EXPENSIVE. JMO |

Thankss for the replies, I have to admit I was sort of leaning toward parting the car, but I feel a little guilty doing so. The car is a real mess and just about every thing that makes it a Nascar Edition is gone.
I suppose if this one is parted out it will make the rest of the surviving cars worth a little bit more. Brian.

Would like to see pic of this poor car, I have two of them, one is going to be redone and the other is on the fence, it's rough but all there, the other one is a solid car with everything there, in boxes. LOL
