Default Better 60' times: suggestions

I finally broke the 2.0 for my 60' 1.926 but I'm launching at 5500-6000. Can,t go much higher. Pulls real hard top end. Best time 12.606, 110.17 1.943 60'. Stock front end, removed sway bar. Stock shocks & springs. Rear end, stock uppers, ssm boxed lower bars. stock shocks & springs with a 1' spring spacer. rear tires are used m/t bias streets. They are hooking up good with 14-15 lbs. Trans is a m-22 so 1st gear is not the best but can't change that. 3.73 12 bolt. Should I start playing with diff frnt shocks, softer rear shocks. It does not squat to much buy some. The front end comes up but not huge. M/T is 28-11.50-15 I don't really have the coin for new tires. I have a new centerforce duel friction clutch & flywheel set up. It grabs great & holds. I should be able to tweak the suspention to cut my 60's but still new & learning.

Judging by your MPH vs. ET numbers your spinning out of the hole. A 2.20 first gear, 28" tires, 3.73's and 400 inches is going to be tough to 60'. Lower gears would help but may be to much for street use. 90/10's up front would sure help transfer the weight.

I have 4.10s and 26.5" slicks, boxed lowers, adj uppers, and the no hop bars on my 66. My 389 would bog comming out of the hole. or spin. Put a M-20 gear set in and changed the whole attitude of the car comming out. I finally got the weight to transfer and pull up the front end up more. The car stays hooked and doesn't bog. Went from 1.90s to 1.60s on my 60'.
I also added a Gear venders unit to the back of the Muncie HD. This was before the 5 speed stuff was popular. Fun to drive on the street too.
All in the gear ratios... IMHO. Typical in the lower 400 hp area such as my 389.

You are either spinning or the clutch is slipping bad, with a similar combo I made it to the low 1.7x's and went thru several clutches, including the cfdf before I went to the dark(cheap) side(TH400, 1.65's now). More gear and a 1500-2000 dollar clutch set-up is what I was looking at as the next step with the M22. -Jim

Thanks for the responses. I guess I know that the m-22 gearing is hurting my 60's Can I get new gearing or just first gear changed in the trans. I really don't have the money to have it totally rebuilt. Does anybody make the special gears that go into the m-22 in different ratio's. If I go to a m-20 I got to change clutch disc & don't have the same strenght.

Diamondjim: I know the temptaion's to go to the (dark side). But I love my 4-speed so much. It's so much more fun to drive. I know it's not the best for drag racing but you know what it's like.

The Italian Aftermarket M22 gears come in Close (2.20) with 10 or 26 Spline Input (clutch gears) and Wide (2.56) in 26 Spline Input only) Ratios. Several places stock these if you do a search.

Keep in mind a 4 speed is good at finding the weakest link eventually.

If you want to learn how to launch a stick shift car go to either a NHRA Division or National event where Stock and/or Super Stock is running. Talk to the guys that race stick shift cars and see what they do. One item you will learn is that the launch is a controlled spin. They do not want to bog the engine but want to turn/spin the tires the same amount each and every launch.
