Hi all. I am a new member and I have just purchased a 66 Lemans rag with a Goat grill and yet to be installed Goat hood. I would like to replace the 326/glide (yawn) with a stronger engine and tranny. I have a 400 (so I am told it is a 400) how can I check? The casting number on the front of the engine is 284922 with YE underneath? ANy help on this is appreciated. ANy thoughts on 400 vs 455? I also have a turbo 400 tranny but am considering a 700R..what are your thoughts on this tranny? Does it require modification to install? You see...my buddy just bought a GTA Fairlane ragtop and I dont want to eat any Ford dust....Thanks, Cal

On "Ken's Speed & Machine Shop" page it shows YE as being a 71,or 72 455 block. But the block casting numbers are not in the 200,000 series (you may have pick the wrong casting number). You can findout if it's a 455 by looking on the side of the block for the number 455 cast into it.

The YE code was also used from 65-69 to designate certain 389's from 65-66 and 400's from 67-69. The code doesn't appear to have been used in 70. Like 428PHIL mentioned, it will have 455 cast into the block if it is a 400.

To tell what year block it is, you need to find the date code which is located by the distributer. I will read something like A228 for example. The first letter tells the month, the next two tell the day of the month and the last one tells the year.

As for using the 7004R transmission, you will need to get an adapter plate since it has only a Chevy bellhousing pattern which is different than the BOP pattern that Pontiacs use. Also stick with the 87-92 model transmissions as they had some pretty important revisions compared to the earlier versions. And also the TV (kickdown) cable adjustment on these transmissions ABSOLUTELY NEEDS to be set and adjusted properly for this transmission to last.

Thanks, I have now and since found out that it is a 1967 325hp 400 with a turbo 400 tranny.. Your help and advice is appreciated
