I'm excited. The car will be painted this week. The body work and prep is complete, the chrome and stainless all fit well, I have everything for the interior except for the headliner, and I took the seats to be upolstered today. I was looking back through this post from the beginning, and I am amazed at what I have learned during this process, both from hands on trial and error, and you guys on this forum. I believe I spent more money than I probably needed to, but I learned much more than a nice car to begin with would have allowed.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and I've checked....it's not a train. I laughed pretty hard at the post I made in August or Sept 2005 saying I was already thinking about the upolstery, here it is 2 years later and I'm just now ready for that. Thanks to all who have helped thus far, and I know I am far from done ......but I can see it from here. Gene |

First paint
Well, the entire car is ready to paint. The first bit of final color is on the dash. It needs to be flattened, on the top though, and the upper doors/quarters need to be painted to match the upolstry, and then the main car gets painted. Hopefully that will be this week. The trunk has been sprayed with a rhino liner type material, and then painted with a spatter paint I bought on ebay. Only problem is the paint didn't spatter. I've got a couple rattle cans of aqua spatter coming from Eastwood along with the top satin clear to go over it. The ebay paint was a quart container, and I thought it would be better then using the rattle cans, .....shows what I know. The parchment paint will be a 3 part process (base, pearl and clear) in hopes of matching the pearl door panels and seat covers. I put some of the availabe parchment paint against the panels, and it was ugly. It didnt just "not look nice".... it was ugly. The seats should be done this week. I'll snap some more pics next weekend.

PAINT!!
Well the body has been painted (but still needs to be sanded and polished out), still to go the doors, hood, trunk lid etc. The color looks good although I have seen so many variations on Tyrol Blue I don't know which is the correct one. The rest of the body parts will be painted this week, and we should be putting it back together next week. Exciting times. |

two weeks from being done
It's been quite an adventure fixing up this car. Way more than I should have tackled for a first project but I am thrilled with how it's come together, and I've learned an incredible amount during the process. Two weeks from today I will bring it home, it looks great in my opinion. Still needs to have the headliner installed, the seats installed and im waiting on a new wiper motor. Other than those things, shes driveable. There will be a number of little things I will need to address once I get her home.

Gene, You have done a fantastic job. Thanks for showing us all how you did it. Others will benefit from your documentation and more GTOs will live.
Thanks Paul

Thanks for all your kind words.... its been quite a ride thus far. I can't wait to drive it.
I have figured out what it takes to make a "20 footer" a "1 footer"... it takes about $2,000 and 100 hours a foot............ |

Congrats Gene, that is a helluva great looking '67 you have there!!! As far as the color, you're right - seems there are a lot of different takes on the Tyrol Blue. Yours is pretty true from what I can tell. Did you use PPG? If so, what was the code? Mine is a bit darker but was done about 15 years ago. A lot of info has been made available since then.
Great work man. Hope you and your wife (presumably in the pics) enjoy the hell out of that thing.

As to the color, I went to the local PPG supplier with hand full of different color codes (GM code, ditzler, old PPG code etc), I was ready. He said to me, oh, ok, 1967 gm color code "F".... and thats how he mixed it. Its PPG base/clear, I bought the highest line in PPG. 3 coats base, 3 coats clear Last edited by Old-Goat; 10-09-2007 at 03:43 PM. |

OK, Final post.
I drove the car home today (10 miles). That was the first time I drove it since I brought her home in January 2004. I was really, really nervous. It turned out there was no need to be, it ran well, handled great, and stopped when I wanted it to. I have a list of little things to attend to now and I'm planning on taking baby trips for a while to establish a comfort level. Gonna take it to the grocery store tonight. I want to thank everyone on here who gave me advice, information, or moral support. It made the process so much easier. The car came out so much better than I had ever imagined it could. Now for some pictures |

Well Done
As many others, I have silently followed your progress over your journey. You should be proud of yourself. You did an absolutely amazing job. With people like you there is no danger of these old classics ever falling by the wayside.
Just like down under (Aust) you will get an enormous kick out of people coming to you to complement you on the car and wanting to talk about. Enjoy the fruits of your labour. Tony |

Terrific Job!
Gene
I think you've inspired all of us who have a similar project just waiting to be started/finished' My 66 Bonneville convertible was going great until I ran into some of the same rust issues you tackled. It got moved into the garage saturday. Major motivation seeing where you started from and finished with. Enjoy your ride. Ron
