I have a TKO 600, missed 3rd a couple of times, which I am sure is my fault. The trick is to push straight up.....if you think 3rd is up to the right you will hit between 3rd and 5th.
hope this helps. Rich

same experience here
if you try to shift...make a conscious effort to move left or right with the arm, it'll muck up my dad...used to a 4spd...made it ugly all the time less effort was more

i cannot speak from experience, but i am thoroughly researching this right now, as i will be installing one. a common theme seems to be: 1) this tranny requires very tight tolerances with bellhousing alignment, 2) shifting becomes much better after a proper break-in period; as much as 1,000 miles, & 3) as stated above, shift up, not over
Tom S has referred to that shift as hitting the taint if you go too far right. taint 3rd, taint 5th. |

There is a simple fix for the problem. I have been trying to find the time all summer to pull mine back out and send the parts yto Liberty and have it fixed. Contact Paul at Liberty High Performance.

I can speak from experence. I tried several different length shifters. I put a real short shifter in, about 6 inches long, and I could not hit third gear. Went back to my original length shifter and I`ve never missed a gear again. To short a shifter makes the shift so positive that it is real hard to hit 3rd. Yes push more straight up. I run mine real hard and my friends say I shift like a madman.

no problems here, my only complaint is that sometimes I would just touch reverse when going into 5th but I am used to it now

I agree with the straight up method. I was having trouble the first time at the strip. I had been banging third in a muncie fir about 15 years. I would just jam it high right and it would work every time but with the TKO, it would miss every time. I was sitting in the pits and playing with the shifter, and watched the direction that the shifter needed to go in to go to third. It was basically straight at the radio. So the next time up I just fired the shifter directly at the radio, Bingo. I haven't had trouble since. Hard habit to break though.

I have the exact same problem. I have a TKO-600 from keisler, and I CANNOT seem to hit third consistantly on the street. However, for some odd reason, I've never missed third at the track. Knock on wood for next friday haha.

same her 3rd is not as far over as the 4 speed, at first I missed it all the time but as you put miles on it it gets better it does need a reverse lock out though, the longer the shifter the more movement of the hand and less likely to miss gears.

tko shifting
I have been thrashing my 76 TA with a 600hp 469, 5speed TKO for a few years now. I had my share of the 3rd gear bounce at the beginning. I think they need to be worked in a bit. Also, I found that if i slap it into 3rd it never misses.Just my 2 cents!!

good two cents! I'm in the process of making my own shorter shifter stick on a lathe at work, it's going to come out to be 5.7 inches. I was hoping this would help, but from an above post perhaps not.

I have a tko 600 and at first i never missed a gear .After about 1000 miles or so i started to miss third alot.I decided to take it out and inspect it and found that the top plate with the six screws had come loose to the point that four of them were gone and the remaining two were almost gone.
Just something to keep in mind. |

I never liked the stock shifter that came on my 600. It was OK, but it always had a vague feeling to it. Tried a different shifter, it was worse. Then I put a McLeod shifter on it. Difference was night and day. Anybody else use this shifter?
