Default No top end oil pressure in rebuilt 400

I have a 71 GTO 400 that was rebuilt, pickled, stored for 17 years in a dry place place while being turned over by hand annually, a started for the first time last week.

It has no oil in the push rods and low pressure on the gauge.

Is there a missing oil galley plug that could cause this? Where is it?

If the cam was broken in under these conditions is it junk now?

Thanks.

have you tried priming it with valve covers off to see if one side is getting more oil or any at all...? the commonly left out oil galley plug is seen though the distributor hole...do a search...if this is the problem i know some here did an incredible job of installing it through the distributor hole...

I found the older post about the plug. That's what i was afraid of.

The shop it's has just pulled one valve cover so far and there is no oil in the push rods.

I saw the 0.030" hole in the plug mentioned. Is this required or simply better than stock?

Thanks.

If it's sat for a while, could be the relief ball in the pump is stuck open.

Have you taken the distributor out and primed it with a drill? (CCW)

Try turning it backwards (CW) and see if it'll break it loose.

Otherwise may have to take the pan off.

Pontiac oil pumps turn CCW.

You may have to pull intake, valley pan and a few lifters. Look for oil coming out of lifter bore feed passages as you prime. If still no oil, take front cover off and look for missing front galley plugs. If thats not the problem, time to pull the engine.

I would at leat inspect the rockers/springs.etc running them dry for 15-20min to break in the cam is not exactly good for them. Chances are one of the front oil plugs came out or was never installed.

While I doubt this is your problem I had a friend put a cpl of mains in upside down. Hole in caps no holes in block. This caused a similar problem to what you are having. Engine lasted amazing long time before it died.

The pan was dropped, pump replaced, everything looked clean (no rust). Still no oil up top.

There is enough oil to pump up the lifters on both sides. None of the push rods were pluged, just no oil.

The front is coming off tomorrow.

If the plugs are in the front then it's getting pulled and torn down.

Did the rebuild change anything where the rockers sit on the pushrods (new pushrods, new rockers, etc.)? There have been rare cases of oil holes not aligning between pushrods and rocker arms.

Use a larger diameter drill until nearly through, then finish the hole with the .030" bit.

I'll check about the hole alignment. Everything looks stock on the heads.

I do not know the actual size of the drill being used but it's fairly large. It belongs to my brother (an actual professional mechanic) and has been used quite a few times to prelube fresh engines.

He (my brother) has been doing most of the work to the engine at his shop. I hope to know by the end of the day if the front plugs are in there.

does the oil pump have the right shaft on it.... that might be it who knows..also make sure your oil filter housing is clear, and not a solid gasket was intalled between it and the block.. just a couple of ideas..
