Default Went to check pinion angle, odd 9" behavior?

OK, so I disconnect the driveshaft to chuck a round bar in the 9" yoke to check pinion angle. Just for fun, I grab the yoke and give it a twist. The yoke moves about 1/8th turn before I feel the slack come out of the rear. WTF is this? I can turn the yoke back and forth quite a bit before the car starts to move above me. I'm running a Moser housing and 31 spline axle package. Currie nodular iron case, 3.90 street gears and detroit locker. Is this in any way normal behavior? What the heck is going on here?

thanks!!

Sounds like excessive play/backlash between the ring and pinion?

Well, thats what I thought at first. But it feels like the gears are turning, but the locker has a lot of slack? Normal for a locker? Broken axle? How far do I need to dig into this thing? How easy is Currie to deal with on street/strip parts? This thing doesn't have a lot of time on it.

Only problem with twisting the yolk is you add up all the play in every part of the rearend. You add up all the play in the ring and pinion, then spiders and posi, and then the axle splines. I've panicked on this only to take things apart and find the backlash to be within specs.

I had 28 spline stock axles and soft locker. The splines were wearing on the axles and in the locker. I could turn the tire 3" before the pinion moved. I wouldn't think would happen with Moser stuff though.

Just got off the phone with Currie. They say the behavior is perfectly normal for a locker. Crisis averted. The guy was really cool, he did say to check my pinion angle. LOL!!

Thanks! Chip
