65 tail lights are crap
total crap, even after replacing the harness i still have grounding issues with the awful design,, also who the hell can see those faint things.
so i want to mod the tail light sockets with a real ground "wire" socket and get these things SUPER BRIGHT!!!!!!! but not melt the plastic lens. any ideas on what type of socket/bulb i should look into,,,, i thinking some type of halogen bulb... |

joe, just get a set of 72 torino sockets. they're all metal and ground thru the body. i put them in mine and solved the grounding issues that plagued my car. they fit in the gm lamps tight.
i got them thru carquest, in fact if i remember correctly they were in stock. mike

As a fellow 65 Convertible owner, I would be interested in seeing what you are doing for a sound system..

You could also try the $18/pair LED bulbs available at Autozone. I put them in my '65 and they are super-bright, even through the grilles. I still have grounding/wiring issues, but brightness is no longer a problem.

I'll be building a custom LED tail light circuit board for my 65 when I get to that stage. Molded to wrap around the inside of lens. Won't help you now, but maybe down the road. I have a 66 lens too I thought about making some for, hard to see the stock lights through the louvers.

Holy bulb brightness in the back Batman!!!!!!
Sandman:
This should fix the issue you have. I went to Advance Auto parts and picked up 4 of the METAL connectors. Part number attached. They have the grounding tab on them. Picture attached. I sanded the lip of the hole that they go into about an inch all around with 120 grit. Made sure my screws holding the tail lens in was tight. Put the bulb in WHOA. Didnt need the ground after I did this. I put in NEW XEON bulbs that I got off of EBAY and these are so BRIGHT. You almost cant look at them because of how bright they are. Standard 20 amp fuse is NOT blowing so draw isn't much more than stock. I am going to do the same with the reverse lights. Got the XEON bulbs for those too. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LOT-o...QQcmdZViewItem Hope this helps!! Dave

How did those blue tinted bulbs look through the red lense? Do they generate a lot of heat? Thanks

Did you guys encounter the grounding problem with a new (re-manned) harness? I recently purchased an MandH factory replacement harness, the sockets are plastic. Thanks.
