Wondering what secondary rod tip size makes the best power in your Q jets Summer set up at the track ?
Is your Qjet so sensitive in the summer that incriments of .002 will make a beneficial difference ? How lean can you guys go when the humidity is up and the afternoon air thins out at the track? Just wanting to see whats working elsewhere....

We run at Norwalk in August, typically pretty hot/humid. Couple of years ago we had the opportunity to run in Jim Zeek's test and tune the day before the event. Pretty much unlimited runs. Just for fun I started leaning up the carb, starting at .040" and going up in .002-.003" incriments. It was brutally hot, and humid that day. We found the best ET and MPH at .048". It ran just a tad slower at .050", and continued to slow a bit more at .052". I went to .055" and the engine surged a bit on the run, but still ran well into the 11's. I went ahead and ran the .048's the entire weekend, and ended up the overall winner for the Stock Class.
On another occassion we showed up at a test and tune session at another track, and there was hardly anyone there. Just for fun I started out with .028" custom machined rods, and continued to lean up the carb every run all the way to .050". The entire spread of ET was just over a tenth, not nearly as much as one might think, as we went from "pig" rich to relatively lean for the weather. After than episode, I figured we weren't chasing a half second with carb jetting, so I've pretty much just settled on running it a tad rich. At Norwalk last year, we just left the .040" rods in for the entire event, and ended up going all the way to the final round in the King of the Hill race. I knew that leaning up the carb a bit would improve ET and MPH, it's just simpler when bracket racing to just leave the carb a tad rich and run it. Besides, if you go enough rounds, the temps will fall off in the evening, and it's easier to predict the ET improvments, rather than trying to chase the best ET all day long with tuning. Jay, for what you are doing, making the best possible runs in the weather is the goal. You are pretty much going to have to go the track, and look at what the weather is going to be for that day, and make an educated "guess" as to where to start out at. If it's really hot and humid, start around .048, cool and moderate to low humidity, around .040", really cold and plenty of good air, head down toward .030's. All I really want to know is....will the clutch hold that thing well enough for some 12 second runs this weekend?!?!?........Cliff

CE rods with a K hanger here too. I tried some leaner rods (I think they were AYs), but it popped out the carb (too lean) at 4000 rpm and above.

Thanks Guys,
Like my buddy Cliff my combo makes it's best power pulls with the .048 rod so far. The air temp was 90 degrees with 100% humidity ( raining outside). I have to figure that would be worst case scenario.. The letter stamp is really not applicable since they are all changable. A cordless drill and a piece of 120 grit sandpaper works great at the track...You can take them down .005 or so in about 10 minutes...just watch it close.... Thanks again Cliff
