Default ID transmission

I am trying to ID the transmission that came out of my 1966 GTO. Previous owner said it was a 4 speed. None of the numbers or letters match up to any GTO codes. It does say GM on the case, and 1 inch yellow paint letters ZH can be seen. I cant find that code anywhere--anyone know what ZH is?

If it is an aluminum case there are generally numbers stamped on the main case or tailshaft on one of the flat seams.

I found all kinds of numbers: GM 21 3862845 9/7 3925647 50 GM 74 . I think I have at least determined that it is a Saginaw, but not sure. Do any of these numbers make sense?

I don't think it's a 4 speed?

The 3862845 is the number for a 1973-75 3-speed Saginaw tranny. With the 74 on the tranny probably a 1974 tranny?
Does it have just 2 posts for the shifter levers?
If 3 is the rear one on the side cover?

Thanks for the reply. The tranny has 2 posts on tne side cover and none on the rear extension. Of the two that are on the side cover, the rearmost lever has 2 holes, one at the top of the lever and one at the bottom----I assume that 2 shifter rods fit into that lever. That would make a total of three shift rods which makes me think it is a 4 speed. Strangely, only 2 rods are present though, one rod on the front lever and one rod on the rear lever. Any thoughts? I am trying to decide whether to invest $ in this tranny, or purchase a muncie or dearborn.

With only two posts it is a three speed. that third hole most likely went to the steering column for the lockout feature

Thanks again for the help. Could the third hole have something to do with the backup light switch? I believe it is on the same lever as first gear. Cant find any other place for the backup switch.

Definitely want to rid yourself of the Saginaw 3 speed. The 4 speed Muncie or T-10 is the way to go. What part of SC are you in?

If it is a 1974 Saginaw, the reverse light switch would have been on the
bottom of the column under the dash.

The 1st/reverse lever would have the reverse lockout rod hooked to the column. It would have controlled the reverse switch too.

The Saginaw is not a hi-performance tranny.
May work OK if not much abuse put to it.

Check the "Performance Parts for Sale/Wanted" area. There is an ad w/link to an Ebay auction for a 78-79 Super T-10. 5 days left and only up to $100. If I run across anything decent, I'll let ya know.

OK, from what i am hearing from you guys, the saginaw isnt the way to go. Got a quote for a new muncie 4 speed for a whopping $1,675 plus shipping---ouch!!!!!This is a brand new (not rebuilt) tranny that is a direct replacement for the original muncie. Does this sound normal or too high? Also, what exactly is the T-10? Thanks again!

DLDGTO,

Here is a run down of the parts I used to build my M-20 for my 1975 Formula. Tranny will be going behind a 412 eventually. This should give you an idea of what the parts cost when looking at a rebuilt or used gearbox:

Used 1968 Dual-Plug
1" Countershaft Case
Zyglo Inspected : $125.00

Steel Midplate: $ 65.00

28 Spline Passenger
Side Speedo Tail
Housing: $ 35.00 (From buddy Tim Beebe's Tranny Shop)

New 1-2/3-4
Synchro
Assemblies: $165.00

New 2.52:1
10 Spline Gearset: $425.00

New Reverse
Gearset Complete
With Idlers/Shafts: $125.00

New Front Bearing
Retainer: $ 35.00

Fully Sealed N307
Front Bearing: $ 45.00

Gasket/Seal Kit: $ 24.00

Hard Parts Kit with
All Bearings/Needles:
Thrusts/Small Parts: $ 75.00

New Shift Forks: $ 40.00

New 8 Tooth Speedo
Drive Gear Steel: $ 30.00

New Steel Speedo
Bullet w/Seals: $ 25.00

New 19 Tooth
Driven Gear: $ 14.00

That took care of the basic gearbox, with me doing all the assembly, but on top of that I had to purchase a shifter and linkage new (about $300.00) all the pedals, linkage, backdrive, bellcrank, bell housing, new steel Hays 30# Flywheel, Console and floor hump. By my estimates, I have a total of $800.00 invested in these items.

I hope this information is helpful...Robert
