Odometer not rolling, Speedo bouncing
My recently purchased 64 GTO was missing the speedo cable, so I bought the "correct" cable and hooked it up. The speedometer pod now functions, but the needle wobbles too much to be considered accurate and the odometer doesn't tick. When attaching the speedo cable to the Muncie M20 tranny, I noticed that the connection (inside) was a little loose. I'm not sure how long it's been exposed to the elements (and road debris). My question is; Is there a part in the tranny that should be replaced, (I'm not sure of the inner workings there) or does anyone think the instrument pod is bad... or both. Any insight would be appreciated. - Thanks ...Go Sox!

Drive down the road with the gauge out but the cable sticking out (if possible). If it wobbles and doesn't spin somewhat evenly, it's a cable issue (lube) or a transmission issue (gear problems?). If it spins nice and smoothly (as much as can be really with your eye) then I lean towards a gauge problem. I always have problems with new cables chattering like mad and bouncing, I end up lubing them with grease and that fixes them.

Early A/C speedos had a steel/steel gear mesh where the speedo shaft inside the speedo meshed with the gear to drive the odo. They usually strip out rather quickly. This may be your odo issue.
As far as the wobbling goes - sounds like either the cable is binding or is a tad too short and is not engaging, stripped speedo drive gears in the tranny, or the speedo is shot and the speed cup inside is rubbing on the magnet. Find yourself a qualified speedo repair shop and they can rebuild it. <--used to rebuild mechanical speedos & tachs |
