I have a 66 GTO tripower 4 speed car that I bought from the original owner. Its a 46,000 mile original paint car. The car has air ride shocks and air bags. This is my first car with this set-up. I cant figure out the right amount of air to have in each system. I tried putting about 30 psi in the bags and 25 in the shocks and the car was bouncing all over the road. I now have 20psi in the bags and 25 in the shocks and it does ride better. Can anyone tell me where to start with the air pressure in each and what effect pressure in each system has on handling and ride?
Thanks John |

I used to run my air bags at about 10-12/5-8 (Dr/Pass) on the street and 15-20/10 at the track. I never ran air shocks.

Air shocks and air bags !!
Don;t understand the logic of that...?? I have air bags in my 60 Ventura. I plan to use them for preventing body twist. I did use a air shock at one time ..but not both at the same time.. FWIW: My Air Lift bags say to keep a minimum of 5PSI and max of 35 PSI. I would think 30lbs in air bags along with 25lbs in the shock would make to a very rough ride. If your are not carring any weight I would keep them both at about 5lbs and inflate as needed for ride height..JMO

Do the air shocks have to have any pressure or can they be run "flat"? As far as controlling ride height-would you inflate the shocks or air bags for this? Thanks John |

Well, I'd say use the shocks to control height.
You know, if it was me I would do away with the bags and air shocks. Have had air shocks on a couple of my cars and they really are the pits. Got bounce?! Gas adjust shocks and a good set of springs are a far better choice IMO.

I'd do away with the air shocks completely. The shock mounts were not designed the carry a load, they were only designed to dampen movement of the suspension.

I would also ditch the shocks, but there's nothing wrong with the bags. It helped the twist/traction on my streetcar.

I've got air bags in the back of my '66 with individual fill valves. With the old heads and intake, I ran about 16 psi in the passenger side, and 5 in the drivers for best launch. Now that I've taken almost 100 lbs off the front of the car, I am gonna try less to level the car a bit......
And ditto the rest of the guys..... Ditch the air shocks. |

OOPS - After reading Tripower455's response I realized I showed my pressures on the wrong sides. You want more psi on the passenger side. Oldzheimer's disease strikes again.

throw away the air shocks and use the bags only; get good rear shocks and you'll be amazed at the ride/handling improvement.
air shocks have bad sticktion problems and suck in general.
