Default Drag Radials that get the best traction on the street

now that i have replaced my 8.2 with a 9 Inch I am in the market for some good tires. The car spends 99% of it's time on the street.

The tires on there now are BFG radial T/A 275/60/15 and basically don't hook at all.

Is occisional rain use is in the picture or any type of milage regarding treadwear a factor? Then you might consider Nitto 555R drag radials. Granted they might not hook as well as the others but since your 99 percent street you can get more than a few thousand miles out of them (Nitto claims 10,000 !) and with their tread pattern and tread depth you won't go sliding around in the rain provided you take it easy.

Yes, Nittos seem to do the best on the street, longevity and hooking. At the track they are at the bottom of the list.

My M&H drag radials hold my 455 on nitrous and I've driven them in the rain several times with no problems. Mileage life on any sticky tire is going to be short.

never had a drag radial that hooked on the street...........I have tried Nitto, MT/ET, and Hoosiers.........Hoosiers have the best shot to hook on the street, only problem is the LOW 12 psi needed to get them to hook.......of course your results will vary dramatically with the amount of power you are producing......more power, more convertor and/or stick = less hook, its that easy.........

Buy street tires

Buy extra wheels and mount drag slicks for the track.

Change 'em when you go

the thing is that I do my fare share of street racing so I dont know exactly when I am gonna need them, do not drive in the rain and put about 7,000 miles a year on the car so I need them to last at least that long.

Your ideal is wrong.

If you street race, there are a lot of things you can do to make your car hook,

A totally different setup then track racin.

PDude,

Please pass along your secret formula for street traction......I have yet to find one...the tires I listed above were all tried on the street with various pressures etc..still no hook

I use the reproduction Hurst Trackmasters when I need traction. They have the vintage look and hook pretty well behind my 462. I have the slicks, but they also make them with 2 grooves at the edges so they would be legal on the street. Also, they make the classic Pie Crust tires too. The tires are radials with a hurst molded re-cap (hot molded) with hurst logo.

Depends on the type of car & suspension ya got to work with and the converter has a lot to do with it.
Each car, engine and drivetrain is totally different.

I have seen plenty of cars around that hook well on the street with drag radials.......dont know what their secret is. Most street racers arent going to give away secrets. A lot will depend on the surface of the street/road too. Some are pretty rough.

The best hooking DR for my car has been a brand new (sticker tire) MT ET street radial. I was shocked at how well they worked on the street when brand new. They seemed to loose their edge quickly on the street though, but still worked very well at the track.

I've got the same results with the MT drag radials, they hooked good when new, even got a 3.8 0-60 mph using the GTECH with a pretty aggressive launch. They still hook up ok on the street ,but for some reason as the rubber starts to look like a cheese grader, traction gets worse. The tire isn't worn in fact it still looks new.Still can't figure that out,but even with the lost of traction the tire is still much much better than any 275/15/60 on a 10' rim that I also run most of the time on the street.
