If I wasn't asked, I wouldn't have posted.

I'd much rather focus on that POS roll bar and the obvious lack of rules surrounding subframe cars in the NHRA rule book....

Tiki, I disagree.

I have a buddy that's been doing chassis work for 30+ years. On stock suspension A body cars, he always goes through the trunk floor to the frame on the rear down bars. I recall seeing the bars go to the rear cross member or "shock mount area" when the car has coil overs with a 4 link or ladder bar suspension.

You would know the NHRA rules on this but there are plenty of race cars with the down bars attaching to the rear frame rails.

Example:

Your buddy does it right...

And the bars should go down to the shock mounts on stock suspension cars as well.......at the very least sit directly above them.

Ok since we're on the subject, what do ya think about this roll bar setup, It was in the car when I got it, was done by a local Speed shop( Alston Dealer) 8 point,it's all welded to the frame, yeah the car looks like a roach right now, but i'm into it cheap!so it's gonna get a resto, gonna make an 11 sec drag car out of it.

Keep the main hoop, redo the rest...

The back bars should at least be placed near the rear shock towers and the fronts should go as far forward as possible.

None of the bars previously mentioned should have bends in them.....

Bruce,

If the rear 2 bars in the above pictures remained, but the X bars were added to tie in the shock towers, would that not be more than sufficient? In effect, stiffening not only the rear crossmember area, but also preventing any twisting rearward.

The more support you have, the better off you'll be. Unless weight is a factor.....

It will help with twist, but remember, twist starts in the front, not in the back.

Yep, I know the twist starts in the front.

Not to hijack...but I have a 10 PT, that I would like to add to. I plan to add the front J bars, finish the X in the doors, and add the X in the rear to the top of the shock towers. My 2 rear bars now attach pretty far rearward. Weight is not an issue, as I will be removing 300+ pounds. Should be around 3000# race weight.

I would get the specs for the 25.5 chassis cert and do as much of that as you can. There's alot of little things that you can do while you're adding the other points that will help the resale value and your safety as well.

I left the x as it was and added 2 bars straight back. Definately solid now.

Sub frame rules are spelled out clearly on pg. 215 & 216 section 4:10 read that and I'm sure the unibody thingy is explained clearly and without deviation will pass the most stringent tech inspection. .

lack of rules surrounding subframe cars.

Just correcting your mistake, they are spelled out clearly,

You DON'T weld roll bars to the subframe of a uni-body car.

What we did with my unibody car where the windsheild bars come down is, built a outrigger off of the front subframe and welded that to the floor and suframe then put a 6X6 plate over the top with that plate welded to the rocker panel, floor and outrigger, then welded the bar to it... Should be plenty strong

Here is how my cage is fastened in my unibody car. It's legal to 8.50.
