HUMBLER...The Legend
I also posted this in Street
I guess the member "Humbler" reminded me of this... A couple of years ago I remember a man telling me that "Back in the day" after emissions restrictions began choking up big cube motors, Pontiac began putting smaller cams in their 455's and pretty much leaving everything else the same to where you could go buy one and slap in a cam and you could run down the track pretty well. Giving this motor a nick-name "The Humbler" because its owners where very humble with its performance once they made this transition of camshafts. I am sure that I havent recited this story as well as it was originally told to me thats why I decided to ask you guys. Not to mention given current age of 22, during the 70's I wasnt even thought of, otherwise I probably would have heard of this story. If I'm wrong or way off base someone please tell me I would like to know. Thanks again guys. |

"The Humbler" phrase was coined by Pontiac to advertise the 1970 GTO or Judge (I can't remember the specifics right now)
1975 was the REAL CRUNCH year for H/P loss due to emmission laws/restrictions. ALL of the performance rear axle ratio's were dropped for 75,as well. A camshaft change by itself wouldn't do much without adding dual exhaust/removing converter, with carb mods & ignition/distributer recalibration. Prior to 1975,adding a slightly more aggresive cam would improve performace, but again, usually a cam change requires some work in other areas. |

So the Humbler was for the Judge or GTO not a motor?

I'm not really old enough to have a GTO either, but I'm pretty sure that was the way it went.

Glad to be of help sonny!
Anything to help the next generation get their Pontiac history correct. By the way, I'm probably not as old as you think - just older than my 70 GTO
