1 reason Selling prices for Olds are higher is because GM killed that division

using that logic Studebaker, Edsel, and AMC should be getting the bigger bucks that their GM counterparts ... but they don't.

BTW, Pontiackers ... of which I am one ... there is a restored '70 RA4 #'s matching 4spd car for sale for 58K! That's half or less than an OLD's w-30.

If I had the money that'd be a car for me!

1..convertible (so people could see it was you)
2..big cubes and big advertised horsepower (numbers matter)
3..rarity due to high initial cost, impractical drive trains etc (which are not a negative for the collector)
4..flashy factory installed visuals such as color, scoops, wings, stripes, etc. (let you ride the sharp edge between tacky and wow)
5..valid steet credibility and savvy marketing push when new (you wanted the car that the kids wanted but couldn't get)
You've forgotten one very important thing: RACING PEDIGREE!

Those with racing pedigrees, such as Hemis, ZL-1s, Boss Mustangs, etc. will always be high on any collector's list.

I think that a '70 RA IV Judge would be a better car to compare to the '70 W-30 442. Both were the top performance/graphics combination available in the Pontiac and Olds A-body lines in 1970. I think this would change that picture quite a bit.

It should also be noted that in 1970, Olds' top performance engine was limited to the Cutlass line only, while Pontiac's RA IV was available in both the GTO and the Trans Am. That could be a factor in today's musclecar pricing, because if you're looking for the top performing '70 Olds, the W-30 442 is your only option.

All told, it's very hard to judge the values of such scarce cars likes these because there are so few of them sold. You can try to document the selling prices of cars like these, but only a handful are sold each year. It often depends on who's buying and what else is available at that time. The selling price is subjective in most cases, and the buying trends can sometimes change overnight.

not picking on Mike, but aren't those above terms (between the --> and <--) mutually exclusive? is the car a survivor or a professional restoration?
