Default 61 pontiac rear end

I have a 3.23 posi center out of a 61 Pontiac and I was wondering if that pumpkin would fit in a 55 Pontiac rear end housing.

No. The same center section will fit 57-64, and yours will directly fit 59-64 because of the 13 spline axles.

49-56 rear ends are totally differant than 57-64, it won't work. The best option would be to get a 57 housing , which is a bolt in (same width as the 55 too) and get 31 spline axles made(57-58 are narrower but 29 spline) or 60 olds axles. Brad Durst at Fabcraft was going to set me up with some shortened 31 spline axles out of the 59-64 cars at the time I was going to do this also , but went a differant route.

I can't say for sure, but I would think they would be the same.

Pretty sure '61 is narrower - I know '61 axles are shorter than '63 - check with Brad - I know he has the exact dimesions.

I thought the 61-62 housings were 1-2" narrower than the 63-64's.

We rough measured 7/8", which would mean the axles would 7/16" shorter

Again, Brad would know the exact dimensions -

9", I picked up a complete 3:50/traction lock for $100, just needs to be narrowed. Plus I have an excellant F*rd 3:90 factory gearset that was taken out of an old Cougar during a restoration.
I looked at it this way , any 57-64(59-64 posi) pig is at least 400-500 bucks, plus a housing and axles and whatever gear you want , another $500. Since my car is leafspring , I didn't have to worry about control arm mounts etc.
I really hated to think about using this part in my car at first, but my budget really isn't there just so I could run a Pontiac rear end and I got this other rear end so cheap..I figured any hardcore Nascar fan doesn't worry about their GM guys running the same rear end under their car.

I am planning on keeping my original '57 rear and using a detroit locker and 31 spline axles from Fabcraft. I am just waiting for Fabcraft to finish the lockers.
