Back in 1977 I owned a 64 Lemans into which I was swapping a 389 to take the place of the existing 326. The Lemans was a factory manual in the floor tranny car. I decided to put in the heavier duty clutch that was standard on the GTO, figuring that the increased power from the 389 would make that move make sense. All went well until I tried to replace the throwout bearing with the heavier duty GTO bearing. It wouldn't fit into the clutch fork no matter what I did. I went to the Pontiac dealer and checked the number on the clutch fork and the GM book showed just one fork for both the Lemans and the GTO. According to the book all should fit together, but in fact it didn't.
Later I found out that the Lemans came with a smaller clutch, clutch fork and throwout bearing. I don't know what the part numbers are, but I do know that just because it's from 1964 doesn't mean it will fit right!
