th350 cleaning/service/upgrade
Hi folks.
Wondered if anyone could give me any tip's before I pick the tranny "apart". Guess apart's not the right word, but I will clean it up on the outside and put in a trans-go recalibration kit (stage 1 and 2). I have no experience of the th350, just what I have read on the net and in books. (Have only changed the drive and driven gear so far for calibration of the speedometer...) One question for starters, when I follow the instructions for the trans-go kit (2 pages), Is it ok to have the tranny up-side down? (no balls that will fall out etc?) The filter inside, should that be changed? Any input appreciated.

The filter should be changed if it is the paper type, the micro screens can be cleaned and re-used. Are you performing major surgury, or just installing a "shift" kit? The Transgo kits are very good, we use them here. The TH350 is also a very good transmission, they need help in a few areas for "serious" high performance use, but last nearly forever in stock/mild applications without a lot of help......Cliff

The transmission is the only thing so far I havent looked into. It shifts good and havent failed me so far. (Even so I havent felt to put it to a good test since I dont know status of it.)

The fluid and contents of the pan will tell you the condition of the internals. It a good portion of the transmission is in the pan, then it probably needs some attention.
You can perform and air test with the pan off to verify the function of the clutch packs, and detect any excessive leakage at the seals/sealing rings while the valve body is off the unit. For the most part, if the trans works good and the pan isn't full of debri, fluid not burnt, it will respond fine to the installation of a "shift kit". Shift kits are not meant to save or extend the life of nearly worn out units!.......Cliff
