clean/lubricate a shifter?

anyone know the best way to clean my 4 speed ITM shifter and what to use to lubricate it on my 73 Grand Am? shifter gets hung up sometimes when coming out and going into reverse. I sprayed white lithium grease into it and it did work better but it's still not perfect
