Interchangeable carbs?

I see some cheap Rochester quadrajet carbs on Ebay, from later models, from other cars (Buick, Chev., etc.) - my question, will these work on my '70? Were the bolt patterns and fuel distribution approximately the same? If I don't care about numbers matching, can I just pick up one of these cheap ones, deal with any linkage differences and cap off vaccuum ports I don't need, and go with it.
