Default carb help.

This is what came on the car when I bought it. What size carb is it and was the setup correct? It runs like crap. The edelbrock I got for free. I think it is a 600 but not sure. Would that be a good carb to run and what would I need to make it fit? I installed it but it would not start. put the holley back on but is all messed up. What do I do? I am not racing this car or anything. I just want it to run smooth and be reliable. Thanks guys and sorry for my ignorance.

Ok the edelbrock #is 1405 whick is a 600 with manual choke. I do have electric choke hooked up so I will need a 1406. the holley I have is a 1850-4. I have no idea what it is for. My question is what do I need to hook the edelbrock up to the stock manifold. Will it bolt right up or do I need a adaptor plate. Or should I just buy a new edelbrock intake manifold.

also can you convert a manual choke to a electric? I have the wires hooked up but the edelbrock i'm gonna use is manual. So I can use that until I can add the choke or will I have to buy a new carb?

Put those newbee´s (we have all been newbee´s) carbs on Epay and get yourself a real Pontiac Rochester Quadrajet of the 1969-80 vintage.

Default Edelbrock carb

I swapped a 2 bbl setup on my '68 Lemans for a 4 bbl using a 1969 Pontiac 4 bbl intake (I think just like yours just coded different). Yours looks like a 1968 since the last three numbers are 140. I installed the same Edelbrock carb only with the electric choke. You will need the aluminum adaptor plate to go from spread bore (intake) to square bore (carb). I don't know about converting the choke on yours to electric, but I would guess it can be done with some kind of kit. My car runs great with the Edelbrock. It's not set up for performance, just a driver. If that's what you are looking for or if you are on a tight budget, I'd stick with the carb you have.

agreed, lose the adapter plate and go with a spreadbore carb.

ok way confused now. I put the edelbrock on with the adapter plate. It won't even sputter. I sprayed starting fluid down the intake nothing. even tried a little gas. But as soon as I put the holly back on it fires right up. The edelbrock is empty but I was told if I spray staring fluid down the carb just to get the engine running a little the fuel pump will take over and fill the bowls. Then after a few times doing this the carb should be full and run on it's own. Does anyone have any ideas or something. I am in quite the pickle. LOL

That Edelbrock can be made to run nicely. You probably have to open it up and clean it out. Underneath the needles and seats there are small fuel straining filters. If the carb is dirty, these can plug up. As well there may be a little screen behind the fuel inlet fitting.

It would be a lot chaeper just to clean out that edelbrock and run it than it would be to buy another. You will only need a couple of cans of carb cleaner and a new airhorn gasket. Edelbrock sells them in packs of 5 for about $10. Or, you could just buy a carb kit and throw it it, but for a freebie unknown carb, you don't want to waste $50 if it turns out to be junk.

If the carb does turn out to be good and only needed a good cleaning, you can get an electric choke kit from edelbrock to convert the manual to electric. The part# is 1478 and is about $50.

boy do I feel stupid. Why is it that holley puts the fuel line in the front and edelbrock puts it in the back?? I think it is to confuse people like me. This is my first real car so don't beat me up too bad. I have a motorcycle since I could drive and no car. By the way car runs like a dream now.

Well atleast your PCV passage will be de-gunked now. No worries dude, you got it working all by yourself. The other alternative would be to take it to those "crooks on the corner" and pay an arm and a leg for work. We all have to start somewhere.

well I put the edelbrock on. Ran fine in the driveway but as soon as I went down the street drove like ****. Real sputtery like and wanted to stall when I turned with the clutch in. I got home and took the carb off and apart. Ifigured the floats needed adjustment. Also found the sputtering problem. One of the jets that points up as you are looking down on it was clogged. Cleaned it out and put it back on. Runs good now. no sputtering but it still wants to stall a little turning. Should I adjust the floats up some more? Also it is really jerky when I touch the gas? I think it might be my linkage or could the spring be the problem? I have a really weak spring I guess. It pops the linkage back but in the car it takes no resistance to press the accelerator down. I guess I will change the spring first. What do you guys think. By the way first time I ever took a car apart and it actually works. LOL

The sputtering when turning a corner is 'normal' on these carbs. I don't think it will actually stall, it may feel that way though. On the newer 800CFM and the AVS carbs, they changed the design a bit and while turning a corner the carb works fine.

Float level should be 7/16" for the E'brock carb.
