Default Trans shift kit question

What's the best overall shift kit to get for Turbo 400 for street use? It's needs to be relatively easy to install so I don't have to "rebuild" the trans. and I need to be able to keep the car reliable. It will go in a '71 GP. Any recommendations or experiences would be appreciated.

Thumbs up Shift kit

Drill out the holes to the larger size I marked, deburr them.
Install a red banded modulator, where the vac. hose connects there is a little screw inside, tighten it 4 full turns, that will make it up shift higher.
Too high, un screw it some.

Hey Greg thanks for the reply. I have a some quick questions. Where is this plate located? Underneath valve body? Where do I get a red banded modulator? The little screw will adjust RPM when it shifts or the firmness of the shift? Thanks.

That alone will provide some delay and alot of firmness to the 1-2 upshift, but will not firm-up the 2-3 behind a 455. Will still cook the direct pack.

Must block the tiny Reverse-feed hole and remove a direct-pack mid-seal for best results. The Transgo Triple-plate 400-2 recipe willl do all for those that do not remove the TH400. HIS

I have an extra Transgo "basic" TH400 shift kit that was sent here by mistake if you are interested, cheap. They work perfect for improving shifts without taking the trans apart. We've also got at least a half dozen B & M TH-400 separator plates, removed from transmissions during rebuilding.......Cliff

I installed a B&M Transpak and it doesn't seem to make much difference other than being able to hold it in any gear and downshift. The shifts are not much snappier. If I put my old plate back in with these changes should I re-install all the check-balls?

Gregg, "old school" but effective. The condition of the internals may effect the results some, on used units, but the mods mentioned will firm thing up considerably.

Did you get my PM on the availablity of a rear seal for my 455? I thought that you advertised a neoprene seal for the big blocks, other than the Cadillac seal?

If you have the seal, send me an email with your phone number, if you don't mind: ruggles@ecr.net thanks...Cliff

1. How would the trans shift if I left the accumulator spring in place and removed all four check balls vs removing three check balls as shown in the B&M Transpak instructions?

2. Furthermore, what if I leave in all six check balls? Would it be any worse than stock?

Blue69 : child's play with trans fluid all over the kid's arms&elbows. Napping under the car can occur.

Greg Merrick: I agree with your pictured mods: except I use qty=3 checkballs: the uppermost 3 balls in your picture. In other words I include the uppermost X'd ball for Street/Strip. HIS

I just handed a perfectly good TRANSGO 400-2 plate back to a customer so he could resell-it. Suppose you PM me for his email and make him an offer.

Upshift too hard: need MORE TRACTION or need more shift OVERLAP TIME. :take your pick.

Remember: TH400 never hits neutral during the 1-2 or 2-3. rather it hits a Variable transmission ratio during clutch wind-up to lock, so 2.48 winds-down to 1.48, then 1.48 winds-down to 1.00. Forward accel (Jerk) is a beautiful thing to optimize.

Caddilac: more overlap, less clutch//steels life.

1/4mile: sloppy weight XFER makes more chirp. Stiff Rear suspension less chirp. I pick super-stiff rear suspension (squat&hold) and near-minimal TH400 accum//overlap. Some Overlap is kept none-the-less. It worked OK.

During the TH400 builds, I make sure to understand the owner's present and future performance limits, and get data on 60-foot capability, suspension, weight, tire dia, etc all the way up front to the cam duration & carbs...then pack the clutches as I see fit.

Take your pick. HIS
