Aftermarket in-dash gauges - help
I'm restomodding my '66 LeMans and would like to retrofit my dash with new, aftermarket gauges. Wondering if any of you have already done this and can save me the trouble of researching it. So far, I've found the gauge company websites of little help.
Many thanks in advance. Jay B |

Dakota does not make a gauge kit that wil fit but you can send them your dash and they will custom install one. At least that is what they told me about my 65 GTO clone. Best I can remember it would run around $700.
I will probably go with the repro rally gauges for about $350.

I made my own. The back plate is fairly easy if you have access to a mill. The cover plate for this dash was made from engine turned aluminum, and was CNC cut. No pics of that for now. The back plate has all the cutouts and LED holders. Every guage has a hand made 14 degree bezel to angle the guage so its flat. The cover plate has arrows cut in it for the dirctional signals and a hi beam symbol and the word BRAKE. Also a couple of special cutouts. The switches are custom from Ron Francis. Its not that hard, but it does eat up some time. But its worth it.

That's nice looking Tom. Looks a little like an airplane with all those gauges though.

This is what I did on my '66 GTO........ I modified a somewhat damaged bezel, made a new aluminum backing plate and installed autometer gauges.
Here are some pictures of mine in progress........ Bezel: Template (This is going to Bryan Jenson IF I can find it!) Dash with bezels ground off..... Rear modded...... Aluminum backing plate........ Veneer with some holes cut..... Veneer done. I used the piece that I cut out for the heater controls, but later change it to fit the Vintage Air controls. http://tripower455.freeservers.com/dashboard.htm |

Hey tripower455,
Awesome job there ! I'd like to do something similar in engine turned metal. I think I can get it from Eastwood. Just not sure I can cut it smooth enough so that the edges look clean. Jay B |

I am not sure if you can get one big enough, but a "unibit" cuts nice neat holes in sheet metal. |
