Default Rod Selection

I have been contemplating building a 505 engine projeject. Concerning rod selection I had been looking at Oliver parabolic billet rods, are there better out there.
Also what advantage would I see in using longer rods than stock, lets say 6.80" rods.

Thanks

I really like Oliver rods but the only ones I've seen fail has been their top of the line billet rods. Seems that they had some issues with the bolts (WSB's)which I'm sure they would have remedied by now.

If it was my money I'd look at Crower rods.

“Advantage to 6.80” rod”

A 6.625 rod will require a custom made piston where as a 6.80 rod version is stocked at most of the Pontiac builders. Granted if your needs require other than a flat top it will have to be made anyway and would be a moot point.

What I need is input to the most sensible combination for a 505 or larger pontiac mostor. I never believed that aluminum rods are a good choice for a car unless it is STRICTLY race only, so billet would be my pic. The other questions I have would be the best bore and stroke for a large cubic inch motor like the 505.

Thanks

We've found Crower and Oliver to make the best rods on the planet, as far as a steel rod is concerned. We've seen Crower rods fail as well, but those types of failures are rarely the rod's fault, they get caught up in it.
For aluminum rods, we like Fowler.

The 4.375" bore/4.25" stroke is a 511, but very popular with the aftermarket block. The 4.350" bore with the 4.25" stroke is the 505 combo most are using.

What is the application? Bigger isn't always better...

For my 505 project I considered either the Crower 6.8 rods or the Eagle 6.8 rods with the bolt upgrade, either rod would work quite well for the intended 600-630 horsepower level. And the small difference in cost was not a factor.
I choose the Eagle rods simply because they are about 45 grams lighter.

The most common 505 is the 4.350x4.25 with a 6.80 rod that is what I have. In the near future I will be putting in aluminum rods in, around 6.9” using the 535/540ci (4.5” arm) pin height piston.

Default Rods

Under 800 horse power Eagal rods are fine if you upgrade the rod bolts ( ARP2000 or L19 ). Oliver billets are a great rod bit probably over kill...........900 horse power or more. They (Oliver) make a forge rod that is stronger then Eagals and would be a good choice. A Crowler forge rod is also a good rod. I run the Oliver Billets in my BLOWN Pontiac.

I think if you bought George's Eagle Rod's you'd be safe, I don't trust the eagle stuff that hasn't been field tested...Actually I don't trust the eagle stuff at all!!!

I would run Crower or Oliver, I believe Oliver has a forged as well.
