When i had this motor built, the guys at the shop balanced everything. or so i think they did. i know the pistons got balanced i saw the grinding they did under the bottoms, as well as the rods and the welding on the crank. Now my question is, when the crank was balanced they did not have my Harmonic Balancer or my flexplate. so is my engine going to tear its self to pieces because it was not balanced with these pieces as well.
or do i need to just stop right now and pull the engine out of the car agian and take it back to them with the balancer and flexplate and say rebalance this thing ?? i doesnt have any weird vibrations or anything once its warmed up and running runs smoothe as a bowl of JEllo, just kinda rough when first fired up, but that is normal i believe just cold natured. Rough at start-up is a Power balance issue. Usually carb related too rich or too lean.
Or, if vacuum is typically low, then cam too big. "11.00/123MPH/1.50 60foot/29.5"/4.10:1/10"/472 #48/Flat HYD/DualQuad/Wenzler/3250Lbs 12.00/112MPH/1.61 60foot/26"/3.31:1/10"/472 #48/FlatHYD/Q-Jet/Torker/3650Lbs"

As long as your flexplate/flywheel & balancer are neutral balanced you will be fine. Your cold start-up problem is normal until everything gets warmed up.

If you buy a new balancer and / or flywheel they should come neutral balanced and hence be good to bolt right on the internally balanced engine.
I am pretty sure that SOME Pontiac engines were assembly balanced so that their balancer especially and maybe also the flywheel should NOT be re-used after the internal parts are all balanced. Probably someone on here knows if your particular year/size/code engine was assembly balanced or not... "Nothing Beats an Ol' Goat..."

if the flexplate has NO weights on it anywhere then it is balanced correct?? i mean there never were any weights on it brand new so its made balanced? Mike |

A Pontiac flexplate isn't zero balanced. There are no weights because it is done with balancing holes drilled on one side. That is the reason that the flexplate will only go on the crank one way. Look at the flexplate there are four holes about half an inch in diameter on one side. I had mine zero balanced at a machine shop. They drilled the opposite side of the flexplate to balance it. The balancer is already zero balanced.

Why dont they just zero balance them when they make them NEW?? so basically the average JO that needs a new flexplate should have it balanced soon as he buys a new one? or will it be ok. i know the instructions didnt say nothing about balancing it?? Could this lead to lawsuits against the Flexplate manufacturers for not telling its customers that their flexplates need to be balanced or the customer runs the risk of damage to their engine??? Just a thought :P

All you have to do is get an aftermarket flexplate. They are all zero balanced, and SFI approved.
