Yes....I have seen GRP rods break.....I build BBC nitrous engines and they are the only ones I have had experience with the GRP rods in. I don't use them, I use the BME rods myself.

I crew on a low 7 second A/dragster here in NZ
500 inch BBC with big cheif heads etc. Runs 9000 rpm through the traps Broke a GRP rod at the end of the burnout 2 runs after motor was freshened. About 25 runs on the rods. Rod bolt "pulled out" of the main body. Still had bits of aluminium on the threads. How did your rods fail ???? Do you have any pictures ???

Good Question:"""How did your rods fail ????"""
Such as " When I rev'd it up then snapped the throttle shut." or "while crossing the big end". HIS

I called grp spoke to brain, told him i really dont need to send them back to you, i know whats wrong them, he said that happenes sometimes, and they are working on making them better. he offered me a set for $400.00 to make me feel better. i told him it took out my block,cam,bent2valves,maybe the crank also? and a pair of roller lifters. thanks guys

Good friend here in Houston built a street strip motor with a brand new set of GRP's. The car ran mid 11's before and after the high dollar bottom end. With only a hand full of passes and very little street driving (50mi), he started getting water in the oil and pulled the motor to inspect. No bearing damage from the water but found cracked rod where the threads are.

I have been following this thread with some concern. I am assisting a friend who is having Butler Performance build a very high dollar blown alky motor for him. I am building the competition supercharger drive, cam driven pump drive and handling the injection.
This motor is being built with GRP rods. I have contact them with my concerns and they have assured me they are very comfortable with GRPs. Is it possible you guys or your friends either assembled the motor wrong or, perhaps, used the wrong series of rod for your application? I use the very pricey Childs& Albert Deep Cycle rods and they have held up very well in my fueler. Comments? Steve www.pontiacheaven.org

I would be careful to make sure someone who is a reputable builder assembles your next motor. LOL

Fast Floridian, I agree He needs a good engine builder! Just kidding Charlie, keep up the good work. I use MGP for four years, never had one problem in all applications used. Good luck.

I've used GRP rods in several of my own motors. I use the 5000 series rod, never have had any problems.
Bruce Maichle (5000 series)and John Langer (2100 series)both use GRP rods without problems. |

We are installing a new set of GRP 5300 series rods in our motor now. Our old rods were Childs and Albert Deep Cycle and found one cracked in the threaded hole for the cap screws. I was told that MGP and GRP used to be the same people and decided to go seperate ways.

I wouldn't go so far as to say GRP rods are bad, but when Giannone Racing Proucts loses the Michael Giannone founder and employee and builds his aluminum rod company now called "MGP" moving from Colorado to Denver and virtually every Pro-Stock and Alcohol drag racer follows along with the move that tells you something. GRP is cool name bet that gives them about three more years of sales before they give up and die.
9 Sec TA little engine builder in FL...he cracks the story(pun intended) and we find another small engine builder/racer Jack Gaydosh & Spotts Performance have been in "the know" for several years. -Rob |
