Thinking of converting my Muncie M20 to a Turbo 400 with good converter for Southern Nationals. Question is, would you do it for a street/strip application, and what are the +'s and -"s?

Danny, If you want to have the most fun on the street, go with a four speed. If you want to run consistant at the track, go with an automatic!

I believe w/ that amount of torque you'll have to use a manual valve body?
But I still like a 4 speed in a muscle car.
Now race only is a different story. Just get good at working those gears. Ask OMT.

If you like changing clutches and breaking ujoints/rear ends, go with the four speed. If you want to make passes, go with an automatic.

The Th400 is a good choice if you are going racing.
4-speeds don't have the advantage they used to have.
If you go the Th 400 rout.
get the HD case used from 65-67 on the Pontiacs
Then use the best of internals and clutches from the 3/4 ton truck's. Use hardened Sprags and a stall converter that matches your engine.

Usually I'm found working on my Pontiac. If you want to find me Look for the white picket fence and all the old Pontiacs parked outside. And the half dissembled engine sprawled all over the driveway!
