Im not really sure what it does I have just heard its good to add. Anybody familiar with these? List some pros and cons. Worth it for a street car? If I should get one what one should I get? Will it work with a HEI? Any info would be appreciated. Ive got a 70 GTO w 428, nice spot on firewall where ext. regulator used to be. Thanks again, you guys are great. If you are already running an HEI then there is no reason to waste your bucks on an HEI. You won't gain any HP or run any different. I do run the MSD stuff on my bracket car and am very happy with it. I think I would go just as fast with an HEI though. For a street car and you already have a great ignition, why?

The MSD ignition boxes are compatable with your HEI distributor. The box actually takes the place functionally of the ignition module located inside your distributor. The only con of the MSD is the cost. If you've got the extra money laying around and want a new toy, then that's not really a con anyway. By no means is it necessary for a street car, but they do make a difference. Basically, an MSD box will fire the plug multiple times instead of once under 3,000 RPM. Over 3,000 RPM, the box generates one long, hot spark that lasts for 20 degrees of crank rotation. Typical benefits include easier starting, slightly better fuel economy, lower emissions, and usually a small increase in power output. If you were going to purchase one, I'd go with the 6A ignition box, #6200, or, if you'd like a rev limiter also, the 6AL, which is #6420. It's not going to make a 20 or 30 horsepower difference, but speaking from personal experience, I've noticed a performance increase on every vehicle I've installed an MSD ignition box into. It certainly can't hurt to have one!

Thanks for the replies guys, I may look into it further. Its not a huge issue, just my firewall looks bare in that spot and would be perfect for something . So maybe when I get some new toy money together again, Ill give one a try.

don't waste your money for this. ran low 10's for years with the stock hei in a street car. buy some headers, cam, intake, head porting, etc. and help the performance of your car.

wanna race? gimmie the move--

THe cost of the 6AL box(around $160 i think) is very cheap insurance. It also DOES help with starting, idleing and emissions

Stupidity should be painfull

What's your thoughts about the M.S.D. blaster ignition?
I realize the 6a or 6al are better units.
But would there be any benefit with a blaster versus not having any thing at all?

I've used an MSD 6A with the external rev limiter on my Pontiac since I modified the engine, so I really can't make any comparisons to stock. But I know the rev limiter has kept me under 6000 lots of times.

I put a 6AL, with the built-in rev limiter, on an '87 Caprice police car that was my daily driver for awhile. I noticed better throttle response, smoother idle, and easier starting with the MSD compared to the stock HEI with the external coil.

So, if you have the money and don't need it for something else, I'd recommend the MSD. Like many here have said, it may not make you faster, but a rev limiter is good insurance.

Seek out such MSD boxes if you are looking for increased ignition functionality such as:

reduced Advance upon cranking for startup.

precise REV-limiter with sequenced spark cutout.

Software programmable timing curve.
