I would log on to DOGPILE (a really good search engine) or GOOGLE (a second search engine) and
type in "Turbocharger" or "Turbocharging" and
last but not least "How things work: (Turbocharging)"

This will get you started on the right terms.

We can then go from there on "Scott's web site"
which Bruce posted. Tom V.

I found the most difficult part of building a turbo Pontiac to be the exhaust. There's not a lot of room.

I made a set of stainless manifolds for this set up. It fits in a 2nd gen Firebird so I would think it would fit in a GTO easily.

Got any other pics of the engine out of the car?

Nice work on the plumbing. Hope you do not sue
me as the picture is my wallpaper on my Ford computer at work. Tom V.

Tom any idea where to obtain a draw thru carb adapter for the compressor side of a turbo? holley flange. no one anymore seems to even know what i mean. most of there companys i have called that are selling rebuilt turbos seem like they don't know anything about draw thru. does Ak Miller or Banks still make them, or anyone have them Used(preferable).

Also are the all the Garrets use carbon faced seals? the book i have on the subject is at least 20 years old, and the info could be wrong now.

Banks has not made a kit for a GAS engine in years. He is working SLOWLY on repoping his blow thru carb bonnet with bigger inlet tubes. Ak
Miller may still be offering some draw thru carb
parts but have not talked to him in several years.

Most of the cast parts (except for Banks marine pieces) did not work that well. You may be better off have a shop fabricate one for you.

A draw thru Supercharger dyno test in one of the mags a couple of years ago made over 900 hp with
no intercooler, excellent throttle response, good
cold starts on the dyno, etc using a Dominator
carb with big jets. (rest of carb was basically stock). Hope this helps. Tom V.

455turbo, did you use "Weld-Ls" for your exhaust
manifolds and what sizes did you use? Tom V.

Tom, back in the late 70's the son of the local Chevy dealer built a draw thru turbo Corvette. It was in an IMSA style car, but the part the sticks out was the delay in the sound between the carb and the exhaust system.
He would tap the throttle and you would hear the carb suck air then a fraction of a sec later you would hear the exhaust... Very cool.

For anyone that may care, the dealer was L.R.Cooke in Lexington, Ky.

Later he wrecked the Corvette on Nicholasville Rd on a friday night...

Your manifold, log style is EXACTLY what my dad and I where going to build after we looked at my brothers cast iron manifold that was custom on his Supra! Looks like a good setup, post up some more pics as your progress continues.

Tom V,

Yes, they are weld l's. Got the idea from Corky Bell's book. The elbows from the exhaust ports are 1 1/2" and the main "log" is 2" pipe. I got the stainless steel ones from McMaster Carr. I made flanges from 303 stainless. This manifold is for round port heads. D-ports could be more difficult since the center ports are so close together.

Mike,

It has run just not with any boost yet. No big deal, it has snowed 10" here in the last couple of days anyway. The current plan is to dump the turbos into a water/air intercooler just in front of the throttle body. This will keep piping to a minimum. My latest project has been relocating the radiator under the radiator support. I needed more room for plumbing. I will post more pics as I get things done.

Paul
