Bill,
In my 72's there is no difference. I don't THINK there is any difference in the 70-72's, but I think the 69's are ribbed on the top.

My 1970 Pontiac Master Parts List calls out two different part numbers for the rear quarter ashtrays: 8795489 (69-70 GP, Tempest exc. Conv) and 8801663 (69-70 Tempest Conv), so they must be physically different (although I don't know why). Since my list stops at 1970, I cannot tell if 71-72 are the same.

The 70's are ribbed as well.

The difference is that the convertible ash trays are longer (or you may say wider) than the hardtops. In fact the hardtops have 3 ribs on the lid and the convertible has 5 ribs on the lids.

I've got a few sets of each that I'm getting blasted and chrome plated in the next few weeks.

I'm going to have to differ with you all. The '70's came with ribs too! 3 ribs hardtop and 5 on convertible. If you're ashtrays don't have them then they are not original.

I've bought NOS ones in original GM Boxes and they have ribs.

no ribs on my 1970 ashtrays, and I´m quite shure it´s original. Owned the car since 1978 and I have not changed them...

I needed ashtrays for the rear of my 70 Convert. Bought some on ebay from a py member and they were too small but they fit fine in my 72 GTO so I kept them

well it sounds like ram455 has the only `70 with the "ribbed' ashtrays, all the 70`s I have (7, 3 convert. 4 hardt.) have the non ribbed and all are original, and of course the convert. ones have the larger non-ribbed trays. The 69`s I have (3) have ribbed. The 71 -72`s (I have 4 of those) have the smaller ashtrays even on the convertibles. is it possible that the "nos" one you have is for a 69?????? and can it be that all the 70`s I have are non original???

Neither of my 70's had ribbed ones and mine still had the originals I am positive. One built in April 70 the other Nov 69.

I have non-ribbed ashtrays in my 69 convertible. Judging by their state of disrepair, I'd say they are original.

The NOS box is for '68-'72 I believe but certainly covered '70. But it really doesn't matter to me personally which way someone falls on this issue.

I'll tell you what ... ask the Judges who do the point tallying and ask if they take points for "no ribs." It sounds funny even typing it!

Oh yeah ... call Chris at PY and see what he says! (I bet I know!) In fact just look at his catalog. If I'm not mistaken it identifies originals as having ribs!!

Oh well ... this stuff is fun isn't it?

My 70 HT has an Aug 69 build date and ribbed ashtrays. Very likely we are looking at a running change on the line. when the ribbed ran out they started using smooth.

Both of my 70 GTO hardtops have smooth ones. I know both are original. One is Sept 69 and May 70. My friend has a 68 Chevelle and his have 3 ribs.

Just to add some fun ...

I've purchase NOS ashtrays on ebay in their original old style GM Boxes and both had ribs (3 for hardtop and 5 for converts which are wider ashtrays.)

The smooth ones are not original IMO.
