Hi Guys.
I have sent photos to a member for opinion, but I thought I would post these pics here for additional comments. These are photos of the gear contact pattern I achieved yesterday in setting up my rear end. I tried to put as much load on the pinion as I could, but I was alone and could only hold it with one hand as I spun the ring with my other.
Comments???

Looks like an 8.2 BOP rear with 2-pinion posi, possibly a 4-pinion posi.

Coast contact seems OK.

Drive contact seems Ok for several teeth. But, with the limited viewing here, seems there is variation in inboard contact vs mid-tooth contact. Perhaps a Posi or ring gear seating issue.

The most important aspect is good: the contact is toward the mid tooth and somewhat toward the tooth base. Better than seeing contact at the tooth tips to tooth mid. This means the Pinion shim is on the thicker side of ideal. Probably not worth tearing apart to reshim.

Thanks Half Inch!

You are correct, it is a BOP 4 Pinion 8.2" out of my 1970 Judge.

Thanks for the comments. I feel better now and will close it up. I sure am glad I don't have to tear it apart again! My hands are tired and nicked up.

Everything seemed to seat squarely, and I did it several times... I noticed the slight variation, but as I did the entire ring, this was the worst variation I saw, hence this photo.

Thanks again. Another job done!

Don

Don, Congrats. Apparently you got the Richmond Video. Did it help? as it worth it? (other than having to fast forward through all the other stuff to get to the GM section and ignore the C-Clip stuff.)

How'd your backlash come out (tooth contact, pinion preload and backlash all being on, says it is right).

Ed

Backlash looks like it is around .006. I am going to keep it open until I get a better dial indicator.

Heading to LA tomorrow on business for 9 days, so when I get back the new indicator should be here and I can wrap this up.

As you can see in the pics, and Half Inch's reply, I think I am good to go. This is a street car and will never see the track...

I've got this here "Howlin Wolf" record in case there's any whine you want to cover up.

I think Misus has the "Howlin Wolf" CD if you've gone non-stock with the audio gear.

...the music really mellows your temper out at highway speeds, if the rear's howling that is.
