First, I ask in Race forum because it needs to be leagle to low 10's.
Can the horizontal bar behind the front seats be made removable for street time, and still be NHRA and IHRA legal? |

I was just wondering that if a swing out side bar is legal....maybe a removable cross-brace may also be legal.
Sure would make it a lot easier to get someone in and out of the back seat when on the street.....then install cross-brace again when track time. Any ideas ??? A cross brace is an integral part of the bar that provides collapse protection. Its dangerous to make it removable and should not be done.
If you need a roll bar, then no one is going to the back seat anymore. Its just something you have to accept. Chance favors the prepared mind. |

The swing-out bar is legal, but cross brace cannot be made removable to be NHRA legal.

I'm counting on little kids getting in&out of the backseat.
Booster seats, rollbar. Columnshift, Front benchseat or Buckets& no console. Safety first 5-point vs 6-point sounds like a possible Street feature. I gotta get a good look at the RollBar selection. You also need to make sure the thickness is in spec for either a mild steel or moly cage.

Personally I would challenge the technical merit of that provision. As I can guarantee that a removable horizontal brace can be constructed w/ adequate fasteners & ear braces to duplicate and exceed the load limits & shear strength(s) provided by the tubing & filet welds.
Will soon have pictures to document the same. SECOND AMENDMENT: AMERICA'S ORIGINAL HOMELAND SECURITY. I Misus Rash'!

Your efforts would be the exception, not the rule. AND, untill tested to failure, there is no way to accurately determine that.

Definitly NO on removable cross bar.... Larry, Bars and braces have been determined, by years of reporting incidents on the track, to NHRA central in Glendora Ca. If you want to wreck you car 50 or 60 times and prove it's a solid idea they might accept your idea. Don't let any new ideas slide out of you mind, just because the rule book doesn't agree. The rules are NHRA minimum safety requirements to race an NHRA track. IHRA follows the same rules almost to a T.

HIS, one thing to consider with regards to passengers in the rear of a car w/ a cage. Most cages have bars that connect from the main hoop, down through the package tray and either through the trunk floor or attach to the trunk floor. This would mean the passenger would have to sit with their head between the bars. This is not advisable on the street. The angle of the bars in relation to the passengers' head is way too dangerous. If your car was tagged from the side, the passenger would hit their head on the bar. It doesn't take much for you to crack your melon on a steel tube. I cringe when I see people running around on the street with no safety padding on their cage.
My chassis buddy that did my cage highly recommended I never have passenger ride in the rear of the car. I know, some people do it but personally, I would not. Frank Rizzo. Tempest455 http://www.wauknet.com/douthitt/
