I am changing 400 engines in a 1969 convertible and would like to switch from the installed auto trans to a 4 speed (M20 or M21) at the same time. Is this a reasonable undertaking or does it involve welding, patching, cutting the floor boards, etc? I am aware that the clutch linkage has a lot of parts, but it looks like they pretty much all bolt right up. Shifter is in the console so I am not involved it moving off the column. Do not have a lot resources down here if it will involve a lot of machining or I get in trouble.
Thanks for the assistance -- Bucko |

It is a pretty routine swap to do. I think you may need to cut a hole larger in the floor tunnel, under the console, to accomodate a 4 speed but othe than that, it is a bolt in swap. I am not sure if the drive shaft needs to be swapped out as well.

Hey Bucko,
THIS IS THE BEST THING I HAVE DONE TO MY CAR YET! I did a 4 speed swap two years ago. The driveshaft and crossmember will work ONLY if the car currently has a turbo 350. Check the want ads for a flywheel, bellhousing, z-bar, and pedals. The rest is available from PY. Email me with any questions. |
