I have a 12 bolt in my '67 GTO and I keep tearing up the outer bearing on the bearing kit. Anybody else have this problem? I found out one thing from Strange though, the kit I have that most people install is reccomended for drag race use only. The bearings aren't designed to handle any side loading (street/strip use). They do however offer a kit complete with axles and bearings that are a Timken bearing which are readily available at parts houses; which the other style bearings are Strange only. Imight have answered my own question! I just haven't heard of any one else with this problem.

Try an alignment rack - the orientation of the rear tires/wheels should give a clue

You are correct that most of the C Clip eliminator kits use a bearing that is not real happy with side loads, I think a ball bearing type. Some have a "Oval track" kit or weld on ends that use a taper bearing that handles side loads better.
