Help!!! I have a 71 TA with a 455 HO stock motor. I need to replace the valve springs because they are worn out. Will springs for a standard 455 work? The catalogs only seem to mention an engine range up to 455, but do not mention if they will work on a 455 HO motor.

Thanks for any help.

Steve

Comp Cam 995-16 dual valve springs will work well for your application. They run around $100/set and are available from Summit or Jegs etc. You do have to realize you have a unique motor, but many of the standard 455 parts will interchange with the 455 HO. Do you still have the 197 heads?

Thanks for the info Rocky. To answer your question the engine is all original with 67,000 miles but the carb. is not original. Will I have to do anything special when using the springs you suggested?

Your TA's look great on your homepage. I always liked the blue and white color combination you have. Mine is white with the blue stipe.

Thanks

Steve

I do not think you should have any problems with the 995-16 install. They just need to be set the specs Comp recommends which I believe is 1.700" Much depends on how much cam lift you are running. If it's the stock 068 with .407/.407" lift then I feel installing them without shims would be ok. Just to be safe, consult someone like Nunzi, Butler or Comp Cam's Help line to be sure. The 71-72 HO motors require just a little tweaking to really bring them to life. I purchased a pair of 197's that will be sent out to Nunzi for some port/valve work. If I can help in any way at all with 1971's in general or performance, please feel free to contact me.

Ok, I found my spec sheet for the Comp 995's It should be 1.700" at 114 lb. seat pressure. Cutting or shimming the seat depends on the length of your valves. Honestly, I'd still consult a pro and not take my word on this one. Rocky

Have fun with your HO motor. With only cleaning up the castings on my 197 heads and a HO Racing 03 cam, 3.31 gears, and a Q jet my 1965 GTO ran 12.50 at 106 MPH all day and on pump gas. When I drove it on the street I ran 87 octane, when I raced it I ran 92 just for grins. Ported the heads and changed gears and the car now runs 12.37 at 109 spinning the tires. Should run a 12.00 with traction. Changing springs and shocks in the next few weeks to solve that.

Good Luck and have fun.

Ron
