Gonna order 2 Ignitor points conversions from Pertronix. Has anyone tried these yet? If so, any noticable power increase? Thanks!
Give me a thumbs up, tell me "Nice Car!", but for god's sake, don't call it an Impala. |

If your points ign is in good shape, you will not notice an increase. Adding a Pertronix to a worn distributor won't fix it. I had the conversion on mine and noticed that the car took longer to start and had a lumpy idle. Discovered play in the distributor. I went to an HEI.

Went to the pertronix on my stock distributor. Made a big improvement over the points. Quicker starts, better performance. Going to try the stock distributor w/pertronix & performance coil on the 462 to see how it does.

Big thumbs up to Pertronix! I have a few of them and soon all my points cars will have them. They are almost too good to be true. Easy to install and as far as I can tell, they are bulletproof reliable! I will say that they won't cure a worn out distributor though, if the bushings are bad you should replace them. Still way cheaper than a new distributor and works every bit as good and looks stock (if that is important to you).
Brakes?! We don't need no stinking brakes!

Easy to install and work great. With older model pertronix you had to wait 5 seconds with ignition key in ON position to start car. Now they work better.

If anyone is interested, I have a brand new Pertronix still in the box that has never been used. An MSD system came with the engine I bought, so I have no use for it.

My Pertronix was a "lobe sensor" style. I know understand that is NOT the one you want.

Can you use the Petronix with an MSD, so you don't have to change or adjust points any more?

All of the cars that I have changed over to a Petronix unit work very. This includes my own cars and my customers vehicles. I like to add the MSD unit with the Petronix but you can use a unit of equal value to your system with the Petronix. By doing so it works even better. Both are excellent upgrades. Points will bounce at higher revs, the Petronix will not.You should have a good dist. unit no matter what you run for your ignition system.

They are both in good shape. Being Bonnevilles they don't get flogged like an A-body does.

Hey Gonzo. I have a lobe sensing Pertronix unit and I have to wait the 4-5 seconds to start. Do I understand they make a new lobe sensing unit that is better? If I wait the 5 seconds it fires imediatly. Do you know the part number?

Just don't wire it up backwards or it's toast .

60man......I called pertronix when I had that problem as well, as I understand it, ALL of the new pertronix are updated and you no longer have to wait anymore, If you send it back into pertronix they will give you a new model free.
Colorado.......Yes you can use MSD with pertronix, in fact the MSD instructions show you how to wire for pertronix, very easy, no problem I just did it on a car. http://www.kingofgtos.com/index.htm

PNX-1181, not the 1181LSCC. That one is the lob sensor type. Use the "regular" one.

Bonneville Joe, One thing I did not mention about your Petronix, if you decide to have Distributor Re-curved/ Dialed in , Remove Petronix, install Points, after you finish with Re-curve just re install Petronix. Have seen some of the people who used Petronix on machine end up with a dead unit after it was done. Unit was probably hooked up backwards but it is not worth the chance.
