I am thinking of buying a set of slicks for my 68 Firebird. I think something like 28x10.5-15. The car weighs 3650 lbs and should run into the 11's. It has a 3.36 gear and a Turbo 400.
I have seen people mention radial slicks. It seems they are good for "heavy cars". Would they be a good choice? Any advice on size, compound and type would be helpful. I have never used slicks before. Thanks.

I run 26x10 M/T slicks on my '69 Firebird. Most days at the track I had more traction than my wimpo 400 needed.

They seem to be wearing pretty well. Have two full seasons on them and they're still soft and have plenty of "tread" left.

I currently run 28 X 10.5 X 15 MT slicks on my '64 GTO and they work very well. Just 15 passes so far, but the car consistently runs 10's with no tire spin. I haven't weighed the car yet, but it's almost certainly over 3000 lb. I highly recommend slicks over drag radials for race only use.

I've got a set of MT ET Streets on my 68 FB and they are a great "street legal" slick, if your gonna be drivin' on the street. Don't even think of driving in the rain though . The 28x11.5x15s (they actually measure 27.5" tall and 9"tread width) on an 8" with 4 1/2" backspacing rub just a little at times. They hook up good on the track and you can just clean 'em off a little to grab some traction on the street

Thanks guys, Please tell me more about your exxperiences. What pressure do you run, do you run tubes, are they screwed to the rims, etc? I know nothing about this subject.
I currently run 275x60 DR's. I beleive I have seem others mention radial slicks. Does anybody have any experience with these?

I run M/T 29 x 10.5s at 14 pounds with tubes. I will probably go with the Hoosier radials next year. One of my racer buds is using them and they improved his 60 ft and et. He runs the radials at 17 pounds. His car is 3670 lbs and 60s at 1.46 avg. If I have to run M/Ts next year because of $$$, then I will not use tubes. I does make a difference.

What engine & tranny are you running. You will most likely be fine with a 28x9 with no tubes but do screw them to the rims they will spin if not screwed. Mickey's are a real good choice i've had 1.44 sixty foots with this slick so they do hook.

i run 29.5x9x15 M/T slicks on 15x8 drag lite rims at 10 psi. no tubes, no screws and no problems so far that a hammer on the fender well couldn't fix.

my 60 ft. times have been consistent 1.63-1.66's with no tuning on the suspension. we've done some tweaking this week and i'm hoping to see some better times this weekend and next week at butler's.

I run my 28 X 10.5 X 15 MT slicks (ET Drags) @ 13 1/2 pounds pressure with tubes, but the slicks are not screwed to the rims. Best 60 ft. to date is 1.44.

I also run my M/T slicks with tubes, and 13.5psi (go figure). My best 60' is a high 1.6xx, but I was horsepower limited rather than traction limited.

I've run as low as 11psi, and on a slick track it seemed to hook a little better, but the car wandered a little more on the big end (especially when I got on the brakes).

Scott, I have a 9.5 to 1 474 with a 234/244 @ .050 cam Torker II and H. P. 950 carb Trans is a TH 400 and 3.36 gears. I have mid 1.70's for 60' times on 275 D,R. If you want any more info please let me know. Thanks to all!

The 28x9 will work fine with that gear. My car runs in the high to low 1.4's with that slick in a 3400lb Firebird. I'm running 3.73 gears.
