Does anyone know of a web site that gives the horsepower AND torque specs of the various Pontiac engines produced from the 60's through the 70's? I see a lot of info showing horsepower but no torque specs. I am curious about torque as I search for a 428 or 455 for my firebird. Thanks.

A lot of the Pontiac publications/Books have
them listed for each model. 421HO early 370HP, 421 late 376HP, 428HO 390Hp, 455HO 370HP. the 400 ran from 325 to 370 for the Ram Air.

If you're using the factory ratings to make a decision about which engine you want to buy, then you're severely limiting your search. ANY 428 or 455 can be made into a healthy performance engine with the right combination of parts, regardless of how it came from the factory. Also, keep in mind that many of the numbers the factory published were used purely for marketing purposes and don't have much worth in the real world. Horsepower numbers are more widely published than torque numbers for some reason, but I think the factory service manuals would have the information you seek.

Thanks for the comments. Will, you're right about limiting myself with the published data. What I am looking for is just some numbers that will make me feel like I'm getting a powerfull motor and see how the numbers compare with the 400 I now have and the 455's that I will be competing against if I go the 428 route. I guess I need someone who has a program that can input some numbers for me to see what horsepower and torque I would have with the components I will have and plan to put on the block. I will keep ready and asking around.

69 bird just remember that using the factorys rated HP is inaccurate at best. The RAIII was listed at 366 hp and the RAIV was 370..4 hp difference, No way. The 400, 428 and 455 can all make very good power, but in different rpm ranges and with more or less torque. For the street use the most cubic inches you can find.

the highest listings for 1969-70 were 445ft/lbs for the 400s
472ft/lbs for the 428s
500ft/lbs for the 455s
