Just looking for some opinions on what gears I should use.

I'm running a 468 with ported 6X heads, The cam is a Solid lift 255/263 dur. @ .050" .540"/.556" lift with 1.5's 110 lobe sep. 9.5-1 CR
Intake is a Torquer II with a Holley 3310.
Trans is a TH-400 with a Continental 10" 3000rpm converter. I'm running BFG 275-60-15 Drag TA's (28" tall.

I'm currently running 3.73 gears and I'm wondering if I'd be better off going with a set of 3.42 gears.

Scott, you'll kick my ass so bad with those 3.42s under your car I'll be ashamed to show my face in public. The ONLY way I'll stand any kind of a chance is if you trade me for the 3.73s....

Hey Will.. I talked to Dave at SD.. He thinks the 3.42s are the way to go with the cam I'm running.. Let me know when I can swing by and check out the 3.42 axle

I'd try the 3:73's first as they should put you through at your redline on the cam/shiftpoint....if you can hook the car. That's the deal. Most of the time you need to kill gear to hook the car, but optimum gearing is going thru the traps at or 200 above your max horsepower. A lot of 455's close to your combo down here use that 3:73 gear for racing. Street and cruising, might want to back it down to the 3:42's. Hope this helps.

Scott, not to get off the subject but what did that convertor set you back. I was considering an off the shelf B&M because of price. But I sure hear of a lot of people praising the Continentals. Looking for a @2400 stall. Sounds like a nice set up you have!

I went from a 3.50 to a 4.10 gear with close to the same cam, just hydraulic, 14x32 tire and it did not change anything except the RPM it goes through the lights.

The converter was about $450 with the Anti-baloon plate and modified stator. It's about $320 without the plate and stator mods.

When I bought it I was planning on running NOS. Thats why I stepped up to the Baloon plate. I haven't gotten around to adding a bottle just yet.
When I get done with this I really need to focus on the chassis. It's all stock excpet for the Cal-Tracks and KYB shocks.. I think I need to go with some adjustable shocks.. HALS or KYB..

Side note: Try a holley 4779/or 4780. It could be worth a couple of tenths...

3.42's if you drive it on the street the most, 3.73's if there's little highway driving.

Thats the plan.. I was thinking of getting a Holley HP Series 950.. I'm just having trouble rounding up $600
Either that or a standard 800 or 850DP carb and throw in a proform body later on.

The car is mostly used for weekend cruzing and running Car Club Challenge at SIR & Bremerton, WA.

P-Dude,
You know my car, I run the 3:90's would there be a big difference in the way the car hooks if I went to a 3:73 gear?

Thanks

Hot Rod

Hot Rod, what is your shift rpm and what do you go thru the traps at? and your average ET and MPH? What is your best current ET & MPH? Need this to rate your gear. Also carb and modifications?
I had 3:90's (29.5 tall tire) in the car at Texas with a 3000 convertor (3650lbs) and shifted at 6400 and went thru the traps at 6200 turning 10.90's@121.5 on motor alone, without tuning, felt those gears or 3:73's and a looser convertor would be the ticket to mid 10's.....and still a street car, Hahahahaha.

Pontiac Dude,
I leave at 2500 to 2800, and shift at 5800 to 6000rpm's,and crosses at 6100. Average ET. 11.08 at 121.90, best ET. 10.87 at 124.37. I run a out of the box 1050 old style not billet with a Victor. No mods on carb and port matched on the Victor. 29.5 X 10.5-15 Mickey Thompson ET Drag. I run a TCI 8" 4200 stall 300 fin angle converter. And the cam is a Lunati Hyd cam .510 int, and .530 exhaust in at 106 degree's.

And my car weighs in at 3875 with me in it!

Thanks Dude!!!!

Rodney

see my signature for a 1 second 1/4 mile difference...same 472/48heads/Hyd-Cam/TH400.

Key difference is a single Q-Jet/Torker and about 400Lbs vs Dual 600 Holleys/ and front skinnies. Both 60 Foot times were within 0.1 sec of each other.

1/2" do you have a cage in your car? If not did they toss you out?

6-point Rollbar, not quite the rollcage, so, 11.00 time was in a Roll-Bar'd 68Firebird.

The 69Bird is completely lacking such bar/cage, so it runs at its Tech-Inspection Limit. My plan is to leave it alone.

Will be awhile before the next chassis gets started; Roll-caged 63 Catalina or 68 GTO with the blower motor.
