I am playing with the idea of putting fiberglass doors, fenders, hood on my car febuaryish. anyone know how much weight I would save? I will have enough for the complete front end kit $1800 or so,but don't think it would fit so well without mods. (anyone know) also, the lexan-lexon,whatever windows, someone explain all of this too me. thanks

I'm not convinced that the Valence and fenders are heavy enough to warrant fiberglass.

Rather the wheelwells, decklid, and hood are ungainly tonnage.

The Doors...well they tend to

The trunk lid is that much weight? I know the front end is relativly light,I had that off. The fenders,I haven't had them off. the inner fenders weigh alot too? hmm. now the doors,I had one off yesterday, and youch! took 2 of us to move it around. I would like to replace them with fiber, but don't know how they mount, how strong they are (side impact issues don't apply),and the windows on the fiber doors.do you have functional windows,or are they up all the time? thanks in advance.

'Glass doors = non-functioning windows. They're designed for Lexan installation only as they don't have the support inside to carry a window mechanism. That's not to say it "couldn't" be done though. Factory FX racers from the early-mid 60's used to install 'glass doors with Lexan windows that would go up and down using a seat belt strap tied to the bottom of the window. Rig it up so when you pull the strap it raises the window and then just clip the strap to the bottom of the door to keep it up.

Contact Pontiac Dude about 'glass doors on a 'bird.

My opinion? Fiberglass is a bad idea for the kind of street machining you're going to do. That $1800 could be better spent elsewhere on the car than to hang 'glass on it.

you haven't let me down yet brian. I will take your advice. seems like alot of work to mess with. I hear with the doors, you would need a roll cage anyways,so a side impact wouldnt' go through the car. LOL

Didn't think of that, but you're right, you'd need a cage (or at least a 6 pt. bar). Fix the rust and get it painted, that's what I would do if I had $1800. It won't be show quality for that price, but it will be alot prettier than it is now (LOL).

LOL you can't polish a turd! LOL the car is ugly as hell,no doubt. I bought 3 cans of primer, all same brand, same color, etc, but one of the cans came out a darker gray. so I have one dark gray fender, and a few light gray spots on the car. typical WV redneck body work. LOL
