You will have to give the firewall a few good smacks for clearance. On my '68 I took a 3" pipe with a cap thread on to it and then smacked it several times with a sledge hammer.

A few other options are Dave's Small Body HEI, a MSD Ready to Run or put a Breakerless Ignition (from M&H Electric Fabricators) into an old points distributor.

I was told that Crane has a module that you can use in the points distributor and it has a built in rev limitor, the only problem with that is you cant build on to it like the Msd 6al want to run Nos eventualy but I do not want to smash the fire wall up,I put way to many hours into getting it straight,my go back to numbers matching some day.....

No personal experience but Ive read many posts from early Bird owners that the HEI WILL fit but its extremly tight.
Worn sagged out motor and trans mounts may make a difference as well.
I like hei but on my 63 it worked great but I got tired of its bulk and replaced it with the stock points dist. Its runs the same either way.

Forgot to mention that those same people say it wont drop in with the cap attached. Drop hei in first then install cap. No banging is supposed to be necessary that way.

I installed an HEI in my 69 Bird. I have about 1/2 an inch or slightly more clearance. I didn't have to dent in the firewall.

My buddy runs an HEI in his 1969 Bird with no problems that I know of. I ran the points style dist. with a mallory unilite kit and a MSD-6 for about 13 years with good results. In 2000 I upgraded to the MSD dist. and the MSD-6AL, it still works great but the MSD dist. and the old points dist. W/ mallory kit performed identicle. In defense of the MSD dist. I spent a lot of time and effort replacing pins and bushings before lots of testing and swapping of springs to get the advance where I wanted it on that old points dist.
