I am looking at a '70 gto that is supposed to be a factory 455 car. I don't remember the head or block codes, I do remember thinking they were correct, 64 heads I believe. It does not have a twelve bolt rear axle but it could have been changed. I'm wondering if aside from phs there is any easy clues that give away a 455 goat?

The frame mounts are different on the 455 cars.

Thanks,

the pics are extremely helpful. The owner of this one has been a pain to deal with. going to look at it is not the most enjoyable experience. This will save me alot of time.

Jon,

One easy way to tell. The 455 engine mounts bolt to the engine block with three bolts. The 400 blocks only use two bolts.

I talked to a guy from MI last night about a 70 GTO that may be a 455 car. Does this car have a column shift, but has pedals in the floor?

I have a 70 YA 455 4-bolt block.

The quest continues. I went back and this one was sold.

Mike, no pedals in it, auto on console. The guy is now claiming it was a Judge and that he sold it for $1500 more than he was asking.

Jon,

Is 269 a WI area code? Was this car at a junk yard? Was most of the back end in primer?

The YA may be for sale. I haven't decided what to do with it yet.

Mike,
262 is an area code around these parts. This '70 was bronze with some grey primer, a fair amount of rust and a partly patched sunroof hole.

It might be the same car. I remember he said it was column shift, but I thought he said it had pedals. He said it was rusty in the back, and was partially in primer. And there was something about patching the roof. I thought it might have rust under a vinyl top.

If it is the same car, the guy who called me is friends with the junkyard owner. He said he bought it and the guy was storing it for him.

This one was right in madison, the area code was 608. Lots of mystery surounding this gto, guy may have a number of vices. He is always bouncing all over the place when showing the car. His shop is always locked from the inside when I have gone over. They call through the door to see who it is.

Is the one your talking about still for sale?

I'm still looking for something...

I looked at a nice '74 gto, white, 3 sped car down by you last time I was there, if I can't find anything else I may pick that one up this summer.

Jon,

I don't know if it is for sale or not. The guy who called was looking for a 69 WS block for a Judge he owned. We got talking about cars, and he also said he was maybe looking for a 70 455 GTO motor, which I told him I had.

He said he also would be interested in a body shell for the 70 GTO since it had a hole in the roof and rust in the rear, and asked if I had any leads. I told him I would look.

Different cars come and go. There is a guy I know about two hours away with a nice 72 Lemans. It's Lucerne Blue with white/black bucket seat interior. It has a 350-2V, but upgraded to 4V. It was a driver, but it developed some engine problems. He blames it on the carb, but I suspect it might have jumped a tooth on the timing chain. It has little power and spits back through the carb. It is $1500, and no it isn't an endura car. It has some minor rust, like bottom of fenders and just behind rear wheels, but it isn't bad. The car is very presentable and the paint shines. He called me last fall, maybe October. He may have sold it by now, but the only way to know is call and find out.

Drop me an email directly. Let me know when you're going to be back down here.
