Hello all!

quick one (for some ) I've ID'd a 455 motor as a 74 250HP -- the numbers are:

left engine block: 0129286
and on the motor: YL

can someone confirm this the HP for me? also, any idea what kind of car it came out of?

thanks a mil!

To confirm, get the date code off the back top of the block just behind the distributor. It is a letter and numbers facing up toward the hood right on the ridge of the block.

Every 455 I've seen has "455" cast into the side of the block down near the front freeze plug. Also has "55" in the lifter galley.

As Cass said, if you can get the exact date code off the block, that will help. Getting the casting number off the back of the block, on the top of the bellhousing mounting ridge on the passenger side will positively ID the block.

No YL coded 455's made.

YL in 74 was a 400.

As CCASS said look for date code.
On back of engine below passenger head, look for another casting numbers, should be 6 digits.
This will also determine what the engine is.
Then input that into the Misc box of this URL.

Thanks for the help guys. Turns out the motor is a 400 not a 455. It is a 74, YL, block number 481988. Looks like i got screwed buy the guy who sold it to me. He says it wasn't his fault, as he got screwed too. anyway, we're going to run it as is and see how it performs. maybe rebuild it, or pick up a 455 next year.

thanks again,

You could use the stroker crank kits that KRE or Butler sells to make it a 461" or bigger.

Then you could have the '455' anyway.

Someone tried to sell me a 455 once, it had 455 written on both sides in a yellow grease pencil. The only problem was it had 350 cast into the block . Somebody in Phoenix is probably driving around with that killer 455 in their car.
