About ready to put the heater box back on and was wandering what type of sealer was used between the box and the firewall. Car is a 67 Firebird.

originally it was a product called strip caulk.

3m makes it and it's available thru any parts store that seels body materials.

Thanks for the replies. Talked to a guy at work and he has also used duct seal, or dum dum as he called it. Bought a brick of it today but may also check into the strip caulk to see if there is much difference. The duct seal seems to look and feel about like the stuff that came off it.

Is strip-caulk the same stuff as windshield sealant which comes in a roll? It sounds very similar.

The stuff I used is called butel (sp?) tape. It is a black, tar-like tape. I was able to find it at a supply house that automotive interior shops buy materials from.

Good luck.

I did a heater core job over the winter on my '69 GTO and I used strip caulk--it worked like a charm!! It is already about the right width also if you pull off about 2 strips at a time.

the strip tape's not the same as the windsheild sealant.

the butyl tape mentioned is what was used to seal glass tho.
