We have one little scratch on one of the rod journals. Is there anything that I can use to hand polish that out or do I have to take it to the machine shop to get it done.

fine emery cloth. You won't want to get rid of the scratch, but rather make sure there is no edge on it. Also only rub the crank going against the way it wil rotate in the engine. This will eliminate chance of causing burrs that will eat up the bearings. You will only want to use a fine grade of the emery cloth and only to make sure there is no edge.

I have thought about the emery cloth and the finest that I can find is 320 is that good enough? You are saying to go side to side and not round the crank right?

The name for what you want is Crocus Cloth.

industrial supply house or local hardware store.home depot too. you will want to use astrip about 11 long and 1" wide and use a motion like you are polishing shoes.

most -real- autoparts stores have crocus cloth, its very fine grit
last time I bought some was about 8yrs ago I think I got about 6ft long piece and I still have about 3 ft its cheap
As mentioned above, a depression is no real concern, its the raised edges that will cut a bearing so it doesnt take much to clean it up
I have always cut a 2ft piece and two hand seesawed with some wd40 to lube. just dont flatten the crank LOL
