I too have considered the 4th gen/ls1/lt1/c4/c5 conversions. It seems to me though it is pot luck when installed if the m/c will work. I have read numerous post on camaros.net where this conversion was completed and then it took 1/2 dozen m/c swaps to finally get it right.

One would say OK, just use the last m/c that they used- it seems too it is really dependent on the car. I certainly am not interested in swapping m/c's around after the car has been painted and detailed.

I too am in search of a complete kit or oem parts.

Hey guys,

I too am swapping discs in my 69. I happen to get the basics about a week ago on Ebay. In the meantime, another guy called me and said he got a good complete set in off of a Cutlass. I will go take a look at them on Saturday am. If they look good I will let you know. I am only missing the backing plates. If in fact they look good maybe we can split up the rest of the items. He wanted $350, I'll see if I can get him down to $300.

Schoust,
I knew I should have printed but I was just "shopping". LOL. It'll be Monday when I can use the DSL at work.

Vic C,
Can you give me a call sometime so we can talk about those used cars that you said were close to you. I have decided to use used brakes from certain cars. I already have a list: 68-74 Novas, Ventura, 68-72 Chevelles, GTO, Skylark, 69-72 Monte Carlo, Grand Prix. Do you have any of these cars at that lot. Either call me or just write back. Which ever is easier. Phone # (717) 738 - 4982

I changed from drums to disc's back about 7 years ago. I went the easy route though... I bought the complete setup conversion from Master Power Brakes. Back then it was about $799. My Bird stops on a dime. I also used carbon metalic pads. The installation went perfect, down to installing the new M/C and brake booster. These brakes were used on the old Corvettes. I just check them twice a year. The best money I spent. I decided to go with it after rolling through a red light one time. Those drums used to really fade from the heat. Good Luck.

I didn't see any kits for a GM product on their Web site.

Some notes,

They offer a new MC for about twice as much.
" " cheaper pads.
" " cheaper bearings.
The only special order items are the rotors.

I remember they were in Long Island at one time. I drove out there to pick it up. I see they are in North Carolina now. They did sell a complete conversion kit. I just hit their page, and I don't see it anymore. They probably figured ordering the parts ala cart made more sense business wise.

hey guys, i know this is kind of a moot point cause all of you have already decided that you want disc brakes but anyways

i have also been considering changing to discs in my 68. it has drums all around and i have been a little indecisive about the decistion to get started on a project to convert.

just a question to anyone who has already done this kind of conversion... how do the brakes actually feel when you're driving?

i know its really a minutae detail but the thing is, i have become really accustomed to the sort of plain, hard, unresponsive feel of my drum brakes. you know the way that pedal is so hard to push down on, but i kind of like the fact that it feels so solid. when i drive my mom's 97 toyota avalon i hate the way that the brakes are SO sensitive and feel sooo spongy.

is that how all power/disc systems feel? spongey, sensitive and kind of timid? or is there a way to set it up so you still get that confident, solid feel in the pedal and better performance in the actual brakes themselves ??

The pedal feel of the drums is on its own. While the discs are not as hard, the toyota your compaing is probly not anywhere close. Find a freind with another GM product and test those brakes. Really once you get used to the pedal, you just feel the car slowing (better), no big deal.

You can use the drum brake spindle and bolt 70-72 Chevelle brake parts on to complete the job. You need to cut 0.600 off the upper boss that the drum system uses for the anchor point and the caliper bracket will line up perfectly. I did this to my 69 and the brakes work great. The only difference between the drum and disc spindle is the length of the upper boss.

Actually my brake pedal feel is perfect. The pedal goes down slightly but hits a hard point when you know the brakes are biting. I know what you mean by the spongy feel. The brakes on new cars are different. Remember that mostly all of them have antilocks. It needs more pedal travel in order not to cause the antilocks to kick in too soon.

I did a front disc brake conversion and a rear drum brake rebuild on my 68 Firebird about two months ago. Got all my stuff from PST (www.p-s-t.com) As far as MP brakes go they do have GM conversion kits, Ive got their catalog right here. For the 67-69 Camaro/Firebird MP brakes (www.mpbrakes.com) sales a complete front disc brake kit for $849.95 under part number DB1741P. Also when I did the brake conversion/rebuild I ordered new brake lines front to back ($189.00/PST) and they are pre bent. When I went to put them on they slipped into place perfectly.

the only things missing on the autozone list thoughtfully provided is the banjo bolt... spindle nut, spindle washer, and dust cap... and cotter pins. autozone has all those too, if you need them... cheap.

they also sell a pair of loaded calipers in a single box. they have a lifetime warranty, and include pads and bolts and all related caliper hardware. they are special order.

you can pick up a mini conversion kit from ebay and other places for ~$200-$250, or you can cut the drum spindles and buy brackets and backing plates (or use no backing plate). the mini conversion includes spindles, backing plates, and brackets.

that's a total cost of ~$500 or less for a complete conversion using brand new or rebuilt GM style parts. $250 for the autozone stuff, and $250 for the spindles/brackets/backingplates.

using the 70 lemans calipers and hoses for a bird is a better swap than the '69 bird parts IMO because of the positioning of the hose, and it is cheaper. i prefer the look of the bird master cyl with its same size resivoirs (101423 at advance $15.88 reman.)

this does not include booster or lines, but is a complete swap.

oh, and advance auto has the rotors for only $44.99 each (#105100) they are still special order. most of the rest of the stuff has a better price at 'the zone'

Have any of you done this with 14 inch wheels? Some kits say you must have 15 inch wheels, and others say they fit MOST 14 inch wheels. I have 14 x 7 American Racing Outlaw I rims, how can I be positive a kit fits?
