whats the best rear end for a street/race car.
I want lighter, stronger, least HP used ect. I'm leaning to the 9" after talking with one of the local drag race chassie builders. says they are the strongest thing around and the best. I would run a 8.5 10 bolt if I had the option. I know it is very strong. proably as strong as I will ever need. but they don't make one for my car. |

I built a 9" for my 69 bird and used a 31 spline detroit locker 3.70 gears, and a Mark Williams "N" case. all the parts were bought off ebay. saved a lot of cash buying there. The weak point are the axels. I am going to order Currie axels and the Ford Explorer rear disk brake assy.

I had a Ford 9" built for my GTO's, set up to bolt in using all the original A-body mounting points and my original backing plates for the rear brakes, 35-spline Detroit Locker, Strange aluminum 3rd member and Strange axles. I used it for 6 months or so both on the street and at the strip in my '66 GTO and then I switched it to my '64 GTO race car when I built it. The Detroit Locker can take tons of power, but if you use it on the street, you have to use a little caution on corners, especially when the streets are wet. I'm thinking this combination should last forever without problems.

Hey Larry, you mean hands down on the trunk of the car, right? Does the question, assume the position, mean anything to you?

so far it looks like the ford. we have a bunch of 9" cases at the shop but every one of them will need to be cut down, and have the brackets welded. not a huge deal but I think the TQ arm adapter is right around $120 now. I think I can buy a ready to go housing for $350, and dig out one of the 3.55 posi's and put the pumpkin is and just have to have the axles cut down and bolt on a set of old style brakes. i'm still not sure. the 7.5 really wimpy open 3.23 has held up to 1.6 60' but i'm kinda afraid if this new motor ever hooks up it will destroy the damn thing.
right now the car just dusts the slicks on the street. track was closed yesterday due to rain, and today is street car night, and since I don't have mufflers on it yet I can't run. It should hook on the track and that is when I think a spider is going to exit stage left. Thansk for the advise guys. hopefully this one or the 9 bolt will hold till PSN. then i'll save up for a 9" or try and use one we have at the shop. Thanks for the offer goatman. |

If you do go for the 9" Ford, your trailing arms may not fit without mod's.
