Does anyone know of anyone making carbon reinforced aluminum pistons? I ran across this on the web and haven't investigated any further.

Anyone know anything about this technology?

Wow, That is amazing. Now I can have an Aluminum block/heads/rockers/rods/water pump/valve covers, carbon fiber valley cover, and now carbon/aluminum pistons. Wonder how much that motor would weigh?? My guess is the industry will make those for Pontiac right after International Harvester and Kia. We get no respect. JimT

DiamondJim

Sorry to be the first to tell you but I heard a rumour that they are alreadly available for Kia, Vespa and who would have guessed it Lada. LOL

So if the rumour is true and they already have them we should expect to have some avaialble for a 301 (no disrespect) by 2009. All the other popular sizes will be available several years later

I tracked the progress of Honda for AlSiC Block& piston imprenations..they ended-up with AlSiC blocks. Then the U.S.A. Diesel trucks made AlSIC impregnated pistons.

AlSiC preforms are made in near-net shape of a piston get impregnated with Aluminum. For controlled thermal expansion and conduction, strength, and stiffness.

Last I heard for Auto.

My own efforts found AlSiC to be crappy to machine.
woven carbon would work within the piston if it were able to wet to the aluminum.

Hey HIS:

What was crappy about machining the material? I can imagine why it didn't work so well but haven't heard of anyone machining the stuff. Would working with the material then require an entirely different method of "machining?"

I remember quite a few years ago watching some programs about how we would be driving cars with plastic engines. I guess it's not as easy as they thought.
