I'm starting to put together my first engine and need to know which way the rods/pistons go. The only indentification I have is the bearing "tangs" on the inside and an oiling hole on the same side. Also the machine shop pressed my pistons on, is there a specific way they have to face? They are KB pistons if that helps at all. Engine is a 455. Thanks in advance! This engine building stuff is harder than I thought.

The bearing tang/oil hole should aim at the cam.
The pistons should have an arrow or notch pointing toward the front of the engine. Or if it has only one set of valve reliefs on it, they go toward the top of the engine. If it doesn't have any marks I guess it won't matter.

Pistons will have a mark that goes to the front if they don't have a top like Elevatorman51's picture. The big ends of the rods have a chamfered side and a flat side. Face the flat sides of a pair of rod/piston assemblies together and lay them down in front of you. Put the rear rod to the left, the front rod to the right. NOW SEE IF THE MACHINIST KNEW HE HAD A PONTIAC AND NOT A CHEVY AND CHECK WHETHER THE PISTON MARKS FACE FORWARD. If he didn't, they'll face backward. That happened to me (twice!) and I'm still hot about it. Wasted all that time I spent fitting the bores, because I didn't want to take the pistons off the rods.

Ok I think I understand how the rods go on the crank, oiling hole and tangs facing the cam (opposite of Chevy?).

Here is what my pistons look like. I can't remember any markings on them though. Anyone?

Is that valve relief on the left for the intake?

That piston looks like the pic elevatorman51 posted.
Put the pistons in with the valve reliefs up when looking at the top of the engine from the side like in the pic.

Well it looks like the machine shop screwed me. I went to put my pistons and rods in (oiling hole towards the cam) and the pistons are on backwards. The valve reliefs are facing down instead of up toward to top of the block. There is another wasted weekend...
